Den Anfang faßt Golo Mann in drei Sätzen zusammen: "Rußland wegen Serbien; England wegen Belgien; Frankreich, so hieß es offiziell, um zu tun, was seine Interessen geboten. Österreich, um seinen kleinen, lokalen, törichten Triumph auf dem Balkan davonzutragen. Deutschland, um den Krieg zu gewinnen. Es schlug los, nicht um irgend etwas zu erobern, sondern um zu gewinnen." Der Gang der Ereignisse war ein anderer. "Wir erzählen das oft Erzählte kurz", so Golo Mann. "Um so mehr Raum wird uns für ein paar Fragen oder Gedanken bleiben" - zum Beispiel über die Kriegsschuldfrage, die gescheiterten Pläne, die Kriegsziele und die inneren Konflikte... bis zum trüben Ende 1918.
