About this listen
Elissande Edgerton is a desperate woman, a virtual prisoner in the home of her tyrannical uncle. Only through marriage can she claim the freedom she craves. But how to catch the perfect man?
Lord Vere is used to baiting irresistible traps. As a secret agent for the government, he's tracked down some of the most devious criminals in London, all the while maintaining his cover as one of society's most harmless - and idiotic - bachelors. But nothing can prepare him for the scandal of being ensnared by Elissande. Forced into a marriage of convenience, Elissande and Vere are each about to discover that they're not the only ones with a hidden agenda. With seduction their only weapon - and a dark secret from the past endangering both their lives - can they learn to trust each other even as they surrender to a passion that won't be denied?

She's manipulative, arrogant, dismissive, a schemer, plays the victim to get what she wants, feels trapped by her uncle, so she decides that trapping a stranger into marriage is the best solution, when she has no idea if the stranger is worse than her uncle. Make it make sense!
No man in that era... not even Prinny himself could've kept a husband from his wife, so lord only knows what she's hoping to accomplish 🤷♀️
Also her expecting the man she entrapped to be not only happy about it, but that he'll do her bidding... again, because... reasons?!?
I might've excused it somewhat if she'd remained focused on de Vere, but the fact that she switched to Freddie & then went full succubus on de Vere, just sealed her as repulsive IMO...
It made absolutely NO sense that he'd know what she had planned, but still allows himself to be trapped! Go back into the uncle's study & lock the door, ninnyhammer!
This is the 2nd book that I've read
where an author has foolishly believed that a human being is able to play a character & stay in character 24/7 for decades... fooling all their friends, family, loved ones for eons... there's absolutely no way... the mask ALWAYS drops eventually!
DNF
