Summary

Sound interesting? The author thinks so too! Listen to Himalayan Heist and experience the compelling adventures of Alex, James, and Bim as they make their way through the wilderness.

"This is adventure story for young adults is a breathlessly exciting page-turner, in the long tradition of quest stories. The complex and shifting relationships of the three main protagonists Alex and James, and their engaging girl companion Bim, are put to the test as they work their way through the beautiful and dangerous Nepali landscape. They know what they have to do, but not what they will be required to face. Perils confront them at every turn. The countryside, presented in vivid and almost tactile clarity, can be beautiful, but also menacing. In many adventure stories the characters are the main interest and the setting is little more than a lifeless backcloth; or the landscape is the writer's real subject and the protagonists are anaemic stereotypes whose only purpose is to move the story forward. But here the characterisation is enmeshed within the action and the setting. Without noticing, readers find themselves caring about the characters, anxious when they are separated, comforted when they are reunited. Wilson-Howarth writes about places and people she knows well, so there is an integrity in her writing and a total authenticity in the heft and feel of the story. So her accounts of the wildlife, the valleys and mountains and rivers, and the people the three main characters come across, have truth in them." (Victor Watson, editor of The Cambridge Guide to Children’s Books in English

"In this fast-moving adventure story, the unthinkable happens several times over! From a plane crash-landing in the remote mountains of western Nepal, we follow Alex, Bim and James as they escape from the wreckage, crossing terrifying torrents and battling through dense forests—where bears are the least of their problems. This is more than the story about three children trying to find their parents again. It's also a glimpse into the wicked world of underground trading in animal parts and a quest to bring wildlife-killing criminals to justice." (Prof Anna Robinson-Pant)

A great escape into another Alex + James adventure

The author has an amazing ability to transport the reader thousands of miles into the Nepali wild. The audio is also fantastic, the reader clear, and there are some lovely sounds added to really entrench the listener in the environment. An extremely professional production all around!

Certainly recommend this one!

Loved it!

This is an exciting adventure about 2 boys and their local Nepalese companion in the Himalayan mountains.
What a number of predicaments they managed to get into... and out of, makes it a great listen. The brothers are really fun and the rapor between them is very well described. It is obvious that author is very familiar with the Himalayas with great descriptions of scenery and the local wildlife. She also is very easy to listen to when she reads the book.
Get reading folks, I don't recommend all the books I read, but this is well worth it.

Himalayan Adventure

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The author transported me into the Himalayas and the banter between the boys made it all more real. Plenty of plots and twists to keep you going. The story is well written and the author shares her incredible knowledge of Nepal.

Great for children who love animals

Occasional sound effects and the author's pleasing musical voice move one through this story for the adventurous child. Two brothers get lost, kidnapped, caught in all sorts of dangerous predicaments and escape, often with the help of others, mostly a Nepali girl and, late in their adventures, a Tibetan girl. Dappled throughout are curiosities about animal behaviour and the author's keen observations and descriptions of Nature. Sneakily educational!

Very exciting journey of Alex and James through the Himalayas and some very heroic action!

Really enjoyed listening to this story. I tried to listen to fall asleep but it didn’t work at all as the story was so engaging I’d stay awake wondering what would happen next!
The details of wildlife and scenery make for a real transportation of the mind to another world.

A GRIPPING TALE

I love this unusual story. I learnt about Nepal, its flora and fauna and the issues facing the people and animals. The relationships between the children grow as the story progresses and they face new challenges. There's action all through the book and you're never sure how they're going to get out of some scary situations. I particularly like the narrator's presentation of the story and the sound effects which added so much atmosphere to the story. It's one of those stories that you think about after you've heard it, not just because it's a great tale but because it deals with poaching and its dreadful impact on endangered species.
