Summary

She’s hunting. He’s watching.

Special Agent Macy Crow is a survivor. After a vicious hit-and-run nearly kills her, she gets right back to work, and now she’s gunning for a spot on the FBI’s elite profiling team. As an audition, she offers to investigate the recently discovered bones of Tobi Turner, a high school girl who disappeared fifteen years ago.

While investigating with local sheriff Mike Nevada, a former colleague and onetime lover, Macy discovers a link between Tobi’s case and several others that occurred around the same time as her disappearance. As Macy interviews victims and examines old cases, she uncovers a sinister picture of a stalker who graduated to sexual assault - and then murder.

Macy and Nevada race to put this monster behind bars before he can come out of hiding. But the murderer’s had years to hone his skills, and soon Macy herself becomes a target. She’s no stranger to pain and terror, but will Macy’s first profiling case be her last?

Pretty good mystery FREE with Kindle Unlimited!

This is a very compelling thriller by Mary Burton. First or second (depending on the site) in the Criminal Profiler series but the second book featuring Macy Crow. I would suggest listening to in order although it can be listened to as a stand alone.
After an accident in the previous book (The Last Move) leaves Macy Crow with an injury that continues to cause her pain, she is making all efforts to be accepted on to an elite profiling unit of the FBI.
Her first assignment/test she's sent on is in a small town where a missing teenage girl's bones are accidentally found. The girl had been missing for 14 years. When Macy begins to dig she also discovers other girls who went missing around the same time, a series of rapes and rape kits never submitted for testing. Why didn't the old sheriff submit them? Was he protecting someone? Once submitted they find the same rapist in a few. The antagonist kidnaps women and plays his sick "game " with them until they die.
There is some romance between Macy and the sheriff , who she had worked with and been intimate with previously. And a female deputy with a secret that could impact the whole case.

Could not handle the Nevada character's voice.

I am a big fan of everything I've heard from both this author and this narrator but the comically low and quiet voice of the Nevada character made this unlistenable for me.

Liked the story

I have to agree with the other reviewers the narrators voice for Nevada was annoying. The story was good. But I rolled my eyes at the sex scenes not because it was badly written but because I felt like didn’t want to read about it. The scratch scenes made my skin crawl.

Male voices on narration just awful

This narrator does an adequate job on female voices but her male dialogue is SO bad that it distracts. Every male line is spoken in a low slow soft drawl that is reminiscent of a bedroom voice. And the story itself would benefit from some pretty stringent editing.

I look forward to each book by this author

This is a new series and I’m already hooked! FBI agent Macy Crow is recovering from an intentional hit and run that almost killed her. Now she’s back at Quantico and trying for a spot on the Profiler team. As a trial, she’s sent to Deep Run, Virginia, to help with the 15yo case of a missing teen, whose body has just been discovered. Sheriff Mike Nevada, former FBI agent, has just won a contentious election against the incumbent sheriff...who had been hiding rape kits. He contacted the FBI for assistance when the body was discovered...he did not factor in that they would send his former colleague and lover, Macy. As Macy and Mike follow up on leads, they determine that a serial killer is on the loose. Can they catch the killer before he sets his sights on Macy? Another enthralling FBI thriller series! This author never disappoints...evil men, selfish men, and the good guys...with a teensy bit of romance. Looking forward to the next book!

Great Mystery

I really enjoyed this story. I didn't know who the killer was and that made me like the story even more. I did not like the narrator though, she whispers the whole time Nevada talks. It's like she doesn't know how to do a deep male voice so she whispers to compensate, it was really annoying. I like how you learn about Macy and Nevada while trying to figure out who the murder/rapist is.

Another superb book

Superb book with great story, delivered perfectly by Christina. Mary Burtons books always hit the mark - only problem is that they are over all too quickly.
