Seneca is the complete package. He's smart, sexy, and confident, much to Chevy's annoyance. They've worked with each other for two years, and even though Chevy might secretly find his partner charming and attractive, playful harassment is all they have. Chevy was born with a unique gift that allows him to go into the memories of others. As detective, he uses this ability to find peace for victims who have been hurt or attacked. But neither Chevy nor Seneca are prepared when they are asked to go into the mind of a serial killer in hopes of finding survivors.

The truth is, I'm an admin assistant who applied for a job that sounded kind of interesting and ended up working for the Community of Species Government. I'm the only human in the office, and basically I ride herd on a team of rambunctious shifters and demons. I also spend a lot of time avoiding Gideon Bailey, the demon I had a one-night stand with right before I took this job. He hates me, and I really want to avoid being murdered. But I've been offered a promotion that will mean working with him, so we're both going to have to get over it

Story
Getting into the vampire-only detective unit was the easy part. What’s going to be more difficult is dealing with my new partner - an ancient vampire who keeps threatening to eat me. The unit has never had a human in it. Marcus - or, as I like to call him: Fangy McFangface - would really prefer to keep it that way. He’s grumpy, short-tempered, and broody, but I have a way with words, and I know he’s starting to like me, even if he swears he’s not.

Being a hit man has its perks, but I never thought getting an accidental mooning by an attractive PI while he’s caught on a fence would be one of them. While it’s not exactly love at first sight, he’s captured my interest and won’t let go. Suddenly, I find myself caught in a game of cat and mouse, determined to attract the attention of Jackson, the PI who should be my enemy. He pretends like he’s not flattered by my flowers and the mentions of my totally-not-fictitious blow-up doll, Randy (or was it Dandy?), but I know better.

Though I was born with the ability to see the dead, I struggled with it until my brother was killed and his ghost was left behind. Now, I’m determined to figure out who is responsible for his death…the problem is that Detective Maddox Booker, the one working the case, is a grumpy and stubborn man who wants nothing to do with me and definitely doesn’t believe in ghosts. It doesn’t help that I keep finding myself looking ridiculous in front of the detective, thanks to interfering ghosts who enjoy laughing at my expense.

Smart men never dabble with demons. I never claimed to be smart, but at least, I’m powerful enough to control them. When I bound Havoc to me nearly 300 years ago, I never realized how difficult he’d make my life, although “accidentally” lighting him on fire every now and then does bring a smile to my face. Havoc is handsome, mysterious, and somehow, my closest companion, even if we don’t always get along.

When I gave up life as a hitman, I thought everything was going to be better. I was going to become a PI, help people, and live normally…and then I met Jeremy, the most perfect man to have ever saved my life (I mean, he might be the only one who has saved my life, but he’s still the best at it). From that point on, it was all over for me - I knew we were meant to be. The issue is that he doesn’t…quite seem to realize that. But when he’s targeted by criminals (literally, someone just shot at his head), he needs to rely on someone, so why not me?

“You are the savior of mankind” are the last words I ever expected to hear while nibbling on fries. The thing is, I’m not mankind saving material. I don’t even have magic (and just found out it exists). I’m the most boring, normal(ish) human ever. Suddenly, I’m being tossed right into the middle of a fight that started years before I was even born, and then I get partnered up with Alastair, a quirky magical Guardian. He is rather attractive and sweet when he’s not into the whole “woe is me, I can’t let myself fall in love with you” nonsense.

My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate - or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack, whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met - laidback and quick to laugh, caring, and protective. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter, because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Two long years of insults, and having to redo the coffee pot four times in the mornings to meet his exacting standards. Not surprisingly he has devoted a lot of time to increasingly inventive ways to murder Gabe. Summary
When Felix lands a job taking care of a man recovering from severe injuries, he thinks his life may have just turned around. Anything has to be better than the place he's leaving. There's something about Lane that draws Felix to him and makes him question if this place could finally become a home for him. But when someone begins stalking Felix, he is left to question who Lane is and what actually happened to him.
Together, Felix and Lane will be forced to see just how far they will go to protect each other. Being chased by cops, kidnapping a man, and breaking into a drug operation seems to be his normal since arriving in Lane's life. Felix may be out of his element, but one thing he is sure about is that he doesn't want to leave, even if it costs him his life.

Brilliant story, expertly performed
When I read the book the first (of many times), I was startled by the lack of ‘kid glove’ treatment Felix gave Lane. Don't get me wrong, it was funny as hell, but wow!, it's rare to read a story where the disabled MC is treated as they deserved; in this case, a bit meanly (Lane was a bit of a dick at first).
The sarcastic humour and banter is genuinely funny and the crime/suspense kept me engaged.
The audio, as performed by Joel Leslie, does not disappoint*. He continues to wow his listeners with his talent. In this case, he brought Felix to life, capturing his snark perfectly. JL also captured Felix's vulnerability and, at times (few), his sensitivity; especially when dealing with Lane. It goes without saying that the overall performance was great, but wow, did he nail the essence of Felix.
This will be an audiobook that I'll relisten to often. Loved it!
*(except that there were very slight pauses between sentences – an editing issue)

This needs to be a TV series!!
I have literally just finished listening to this book and before I get stuck into the next one I had to write a review, cause OMG! This book is AMAZEBALLS! Firstly Felix is just the best, even though his funny it’s so dark sometimes you don’t know whether you should laugh or be shocked at how he treats Lane. And Lane, just my heart. His so strong, but you can literally see all his vulnerabilities. And I love the fact that he really is blind and no he doesn’t have this magic sixth sense, but he can still get shit done.
I just love this book, there are so many laugh out loud moments and it has me on the edge of my seat till the end. Love, love, love this book.
And I don’t normally like Joel Leslie American accent(though that’s his native tongue, weird I much prefer his English accents), but he narration added to the edge of seatness of this book.
And I’m just gonna leave you with the quote of the book for me(there were loads but I love this one) “3 little pew, pews and 1 big pew” Die! Lol

What a wonderful surprise
I didn’t expect much from this book going in, but it turned out it was a hidden gem. Exciting action, good relationship and I actually found myself laughing out loud many many times which was completely unexpected. This is so much better than the usual boring trope out there, and it was refreshing to have a proper plot that hooked me so much that I listened to it all on my headphones in one day. Shame there’s not more from this author on Audible but I hope there will be soon.

I Say I say I say!!!! Arghhh!!!!
Good easy listen ,great narration by Joel
BUT ....
The writers overuse of “I SAY” after EVERY line of speech completely ruins this audio book - would be highly unlikely to buy another by Her!
Joel is great at using different voices so it was more noticeable and more annoying as each chapter went by. Towards the end I just wanted it end.

I'm going to keep this one in the Favorite pile
What do you get when you mix a bad ass motherfucker who was in the military and is used to doing undercover work but is now forced to rely on others and a reformed pick pocket that is used to being dismissed but is determine to do his job? You get the amazing masterpiece that is this audio book.
Okay so I’ve never read anything by this author before and by the cover art and the summery I went into this thinking that it was going to be a heart wrenching drama filled with lots of hurt/comfort and undying confessions of love. I did get all that but unexpectedly I also got so much humor and amazing characters that I did not want to put this book down.
Felix is a young man trying to be someone and finding his purpose in life. He comes from a though childhood filled with pain and drugs where the only comfort he got was none existent but now he’s found someone he doesn’t want to abandon him. Lane has to deal with his entire world imploding and needing help with the most basic of things but refusing to ask for it. This story could have gone a lot of ways but I’m so freaking in love with the way the author decided to take it.
Felix is a little shit and used to seeing life in shades of gray, what’s a little lying and a little stealing here and there? He’s a horrible cook and mean as hell when he constantly makes a blind man have to work for the assistance but Lane probably wouldn’t have it any other way. 10/10 recommend. The steamy scenes are great, the dialogue is hilarious, and the dog kind of steals the show halfway into the book.
Lol please give this one a try as I know I’ll be adding it to my pile of favorites.

Such terrific narration!
I honestly don't know if I would have kept going if I'd tried only visually reading the book. The humor in this is brought out so much more (and better) in Joel Leslie's delivery of the lines than I think in the actual written word. It's all in the delivery.
The two main characters, Felix and Lane, have the sort of "I hate that I kind of like you" attitude in the beginning with one another and Leslie not only pulls off their banter beautifully, but made me believe these two snarky lovers were perfect for each other.
Notice I don't say they're perfect. They aren't. They're a**h*les that are individually so far from perfect they couldn't find it on a map, but together they make sense. I can see those two crazy kids really making a go of it, if Felix doesn't get them both killed with his shenanigans.
I loved listening to this and will absolutely be checking out book 2, A Light in the Darkness, pronto.
Though Lane does have a POV chapter, Hidden in Darkness is mostly told from Felix's POV. There's plenty of action, humor, heat, and a HFN ending. Definitely check it out in audio for the best experience.

I have honestly never laughed as much as I did listening to this book! This is my first time listening to this author but it definitely won’t be the last. Felix’s awkward and bold personality complimented lanes stubbornness so well! I felt like the ending was a tad bit rushed and some of the situations they found themselves in were so easily resolved but overall bravo. Thumbs up for Alice winters!

Editing audio could be better
Joel did a pretty good job performing, but the pauses were annoying.... "he said." Fun story, though. Good job, Alice. Thanks for the entertainment.

A Bookload of Fun
I read this book on Kindle and was very much looking forward to the Audible release, especially when I heard that Joel Leslie was narrating. I was NOT disappointed. It was great! I laughed out loud, and often. The two main characters, Felix and Lane, are a lot of fun, particularly Felix, whom I LOVE. Excellent read, Alice!
Joel Leslie, as usual, was awesome. Each character's voice is unique. I never had to struggle to understand who was speaking. Narrator isn't a big enough word for Joel. He is a voice actor and a damned good one.

Gold! Pure Gold!
This is my first Alice Winters novel and I couldn't have loved it more! I could go on and on about all the things I loved about this book, but I'll keep it short and sweet.
Lane is wonderful, but Felix is me all the way! I connected with him on a spiritual level and I can't wait to jump on the second book.
Highly recommended if you want an action packed, hilarious love story that keeps getting better and better. Oh, and the naughty bits were amazing too!
Awesome job with having Joel Leslie on this audiobook because he sells it with all the emotion he put into it! I look forward to listening to more books by this author, especially if Joel Leslie is narrating them. Please buy this book!!!
