Summary

The mystery enshrouding Hutton's Bridge is as impenetrable as the fog that descended at its borders 80 years ago. Each year, three villagers enter the mist searching for answers. No one ever returns.

Then a dragon falls from the sky to the town square, dead - the first glimpse of an outside world that has become nothing more than a fairy tale to Hutton's Bridge. Except to Tressa.

Tressa grew up with Granna's stories of the days before the fog fell. When Granna dies, leaving Tressa without any family, Tressa ventures into the fog herself, vowing to unravel the foul magic holding Hutton's Bridge captive.

What she discovers beyond the fog endangers the lives of everyone she loves.

Poor narration

Would you try another book written by Megg Jensen or narrated by Emily Kleimo?

No, I wouldn't listen to Kleimo again.

Megg Jensen? Maybe. But not on audio, though. Not if it's the same narrator.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The premise with the village surrounded by fog is really interesting. Tressa's grandmother too seems to be full of secrets,

I could have lived without the sex scenes, though. They didn't add anything to the story and it felt to me as though they had been added because Jensen thought that's what readers want. Probably some readers do. This particular reader doesn't.

What didn’t you like about Emily Kleimo’s performance?

She speaks way too fast, as if she's impatient to finish. Sometimes I'd have to go back a bit and listen again, just to catch the story.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

I might.

The worst book thats been recommended to me

It's not that the story is terrible. its the writing. the prose of this book is one of the worst I've ever read, and people often just... do things. not only that, but there are regular flashbacks that could have easily been part of the actual narrative.

To be more clear... it's pretty okay up until the main characters leave the fog, but it gets much worse after that. For some reason there's just a woman waiting for them with soldiers. theyre taken captive and the lady wants to bang one of the main guys, then theyre let free for no reason between time skips in a strip club, then their friend dies and then the main guy and girl fuck soon after with hardly any warning and is this really time? then they find theif parents who left the fog before them and the main girl is convinced to try to assassinate the lady despite having no way or ever being able to or ANYTHING at all.

the thing is, it seems like theres somethjng mental going on here, but the writing and transitions are so bad that it feels like the plot is tugging me around without warning. and it completely FAILED to make me care.

EDIT: I continued listening. WOW. can this get any worse? the nagging wife just died LITERALLY because she can't stop nagging to save her life.

Young author and inexperienced narratir

Story was weak but if you forgive the sudden nonsensical shifts pulling you out of willing suspension of disbelief the different sections could be interesting for a while. Performance was shaky at first (poor choice of emphasis on some phrases) but improved with time. I wanted to quit several times but slogged through until narrator seemed to get the flow.
I won’t be reading/listening to any more of this author’s stories in this series.

but over all a good listen. Worth the time time to listen. Give it time.

Very Interesting Story

This was my first Megg Jensen novel and I really enjoyed it. The story was very interesting and imaginative. It would be hard to live in a society structured on such rigid dictates. Makes me wonder if circumstances have more impact on our lives than we think they do. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Way too preoccupied with sex.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Teen aged boys are the only group that I can imagine actually enjoying this series,

What do you think your next listen will be?

Something much more adult... actually have started on "Dawn of Wonder - The Awakening, Book 1", which seems to be more to my liking

What aspect of Emily Kleimo’s performance would you have changed?

Emily's performance was average. She is not a bad reader, but has a hard time doing the male voices.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The story line was interesting enough, and I would have gone on to listen to the remainder of the series were it not for the constant preoccupation with sex. Honestly, if I were interested in a Harlequin romance novel, I would not have been searching for books in the SciFi/Fantasy section.

Any additional comments?

Miss Jensen has some talent as a writer. She just needs to remember which genre she's writing in and stick to that.

Painful

So - first i want to say that this started out... juvenile but a pretty good story. As tge pages turned however the characters became ever more plastic - and the writer defaulted into sex and violence. The sex was uninspired mysogynistic and just pretty gross. But the Amount of sex - which started as enuendo but became increasingly more blatant - pulls this off the shelf for anyone younger than 17 and i really dont think its written well enough to keep a 17 year olds attention.
I had a harder and harder time trying to stick with it to the end. Its unfortunate because the story idea is great! Its the writing that us so poor as to convince me not to for book 2. Not worth the effort.
In the audiobook version the reader was excellent. Good voices - good consistency. Well done.

Not worth the time

Had hoped for something more interesting. Characters and the story seemed a bit stilted and the narrator definitely needed to find a way to "tell" the story, not just read it.

Poorly written & Poorly read. But good story.

With such a good store, a shame the author & narrator did a poor job!
