Summary
This spooky season curl up with the perfect witchy romcom for fans of Gilmore Girls, Hocus Pocus and Charmed. An absolute must-listen if you love Erin Sterling’s The Ex Hex and Lana Harper’s Payback’s a Witch!
It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus…
Essie Winterscale lives in a huge and ever-changing house in the village of Good Winter, in deepest, darkest Essex. She lives with various witches of various ages, one of whom is still a bit salty about being hanged in the 1700s, one who keeps accidentally casting fertility spells, and one who knits things that create the future.
All Essie ever wanted was to have a normal life but in the end she found herself drawn back to Beldam House because she just can’t stop her witchiness (although the ability to instantly chill wine is pretty awesome, even she has to admit).
Into this coven of chaos stumbles gorgeous, clueless Josh, their new landlord – and he’s just discovered his tenants haven’t paid rent since the 1700s! As Josh is drawn further into the lives of the inhabitants of Beldam House, Essie is determined to keep him at broomstick’s length. That is, until a family secret, lying hidden for centuries, puts Josh firmly under her spell…

Magically funny
Catrin Walker Booth helped bring the humour and personalities of the characters through perfectly. I really enjoyed the book.
An easy listen/read, likeable characters, and fun twists along the way.
I love that historical information was placed in the foundations of the story too!

Narration great, story, not all that
So let me start off by saying this isn’t my usual genre but I wanted to try something new!
The narration was really brilliant and this was the first audiobook I’ve tried, it really brings a story to life! Well done Catrin for making this a pleasure to listen to!
The story however just wasn’t really for me. It was relatively easy to follow and the premise was there. It was also pretty funny but I didn’t overly care for the characters. A quick read for spooky season though and I didn’t HATE it. Overall if you like a sweet romance with witchy vibes, I could see you liking this!

Light & Airy
A very easy listen with barely any witchy darkness to bother shaky nerves, but overall it was a little too saccharine of a romance for me.
There were a couple of annoying things: Josh is given way too much credit by Essie - ‘you were brilliant, Josh’ she cries after she deals with the dread threat—all he did was repeat words she told him to say. And for a character that no one can deny is an ineffective waster, I can’t see why he inspired so much devotion in a powerful woman.
And there was so much potential for the celebration of the power of women in this novel. Sadly, it paid the price of conventional gender roles in traditional romance.
The narrator was good.

I wanted to like this
Sadly the characters in this book annoyed me in the extreme because they were so inconsistent off and on, and when they were horrible to each other they just forgot about it in the next scene. Ludicrous scenarios as well. I think the only character I liked was Sienna because she was always kind. Every other character was a jerk.

fab read
Hex Appeal by Kate Johnson is a delightful mix of romance, comedy, and hocus pocus. Set in the charming village of Good Winter, the novel introduces us to the quirky inhabitants of Beldam House, a large and ever-changing mansion.
At the heart of the story is Essie Winterscale, a witch who yearns for a normal life but can't resist her magical powers. When the handsome and clueless Josh becomes the new landlord of Beldam House, Essie is determined to keep him at a safe distance. However, as Josh becomes entangled in the lives of the eccentric witches, Essie finds herself drawn to him, especially after a long-held family secret is revealed.
Johnson's writing is witty and charming, and her portrayal of the witchy world of Beldam House is enchanting. The various witches, each with their unique powers and quirks, add a whole lot of fun and chaos to the story. Josh, with his bumbling charm, is the perfect foil to Essie's stoic personality. Their romance is sweet and engaging, with just the right amount of steamy scenes.
Overall, Hex Appeal is a delightful read that will keep you entertained from beginning to end. Johnson's magical world is so vividly imagined that you'll be tempted to believe in witches and spells yourself. This book is perfect for anyone who loves a good romance with a supernatural twist.
