Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Hetty's Farmhouse Bakery by Cathy Bramley, read by Colleen Prendergast.

Thirty-two-year-old Hetty Greengrass is the star around which the rest of her family orbits. Marriage, motherhood and helping Dan run Sunnybank Farm have certainly kept her hands full for the last 12 years. But when her daughter Poppy has to choose her inspiration for a school project and picks her aunt, not her mum, Hetty is left full of self-doubt.

Hetty’s always been generous with her time and until now, her biggest talent - baking deliciously moreish shortcrust pastry pies - has been limited to charity work and the village fete. But taking part in a competition run by Cumbria’s Finest to find the very best produce from the region might be just the thing to make her daughter proud...and reclaim something for herself.

Except that life isn’t as simple as producing the perfect pie. Changing the status quo isn’t easy - and with cracks appearing in her marriage and shocking secrets coming to light, Hetty must decide where her priorities really lie....

Deceptive Title

If you choose this book expecting it to be about the daily life of a cottage industry bakery, you may be disappointed. There isn't really a bakery at all, just a few mentions of pies being made on a farmhouse kitchen table, only pies, nothing else. Rather it is mostly about life on a muddy sheep farm, with graphic descriptions of the lambing process, and about family secrets, lies and deceptions.

I do normally enjoy Cathy Bramley's writing, but this one really missed the mark for me, sorry to say.

sickly sweet and dull as dishwater

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I would have enjoyed it more if I had never taken several hours to listen to it, I couldn't wait for it to end.

Has Hetty’s Farmhouse Bakery put you off other books in this genre?

yes

What didn’t you like about Colleen Prendergast’s performance?

It was trying to be funny and endearing and was neither.

Any additional comments?

The weakest story line I've ever listened to, if anyone has a more boring life than this I would like to meet them. It is not cute but insulting to the listener in it's patronising effort to be endearing. Simply a waste of time and space.

Not for me at all.

I thought this would be like other "chick-lit" I have read in the past, kind of predictable but easy to get through. I was wrong. It was completely predictable - that is OK though. I just couldn't warm to the main character which made it hard to get through. I was pretty sure I had the story arc figured out from very early on but as all the reviews I read mentioned a twist I thought maybe I had it wrong and had better listen to the end just in case - I didn't have it wrong and wasted several hours of my life listening to it.

I found the main character to be a bit of a doormat and felt like shouting at her to man up. It was sickly sweet and frustrating.

The narrator did her best with the material given.

Great inspiring read.

A beautifully read novel about the twists and turns in family life and how following your dream can bring great rewards. Lovely descriptions put you right there on the farm. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
