Summary

My ruthless ex is broken, bitter, and determined to get me back.

I used to be a sensible, responsible good girl who kept her nose buried in textbooks and worked hard to make her father’s dreams come true. Then Keane happened. He was a crude, rude, ruthless Southie bully who only cared about his hockey career and pucking his way through a string of girls. I hated him and I thought he hated me, but then one unexpected spring break kiss changed everything.

I had no business spending one night with him, much less that wild, intense summer. He was freedom and ruin in one ridiculously sexy package. Moving across the country to go to med school and eventually marrying Keane’s total opposite seemed like the right things to do at the time.

But now I’m divorced and back in Boston with a nine-year-old secret I’ll do anything to protect. And as for Keane? Well, my ruthless ex is broken, bitter, and determined to punish me for walking away.

Listener warning: If you’re looking for a typical enemies-to-lovers, secret-baby romance, this intense, highly psychological second-chance love story isn’t that. This book is only for listeners with open hearts and open minds, who can handle love stories that color outside the usual lines. If you’re not that listener, please do not get this audiobook.

A warning would have been nice,

Let me start off saying I respect Theodora Taylor I have been reading her work since 2012, She was one of the first interracial writers that I chose to consume her work. I will continue to support her as a writer.

I agree with other reviewers about the over-use of the secret baby trope. I also agree that the emotionally abuse lead male and woman, learning be confident, find her voice and stand her ground with him has been overused again. I can think of multiple books I own from the writer underlying themes.

I appreciated the lead character being indian-american and the discussion around interracial dating and the international view of African American women. I wished the story was about her parents vs the lead female.

I am very choosy about the content I chose to consume for my personal pleasure. I would have liked to known that this book contained themes that were LGBTQ. The writer has the right to write whatever they want to write about, but as a consumer I would like some sort of warning that the theme of the book is broader than the genre that I am typically purchasing. I have the right to choose where I spend my dollar. I felt very tricked when I read this book and I am selling it back. I personally do not read gay sex scenes, I greatly appreciate it when a writer warns me that their book may contain content that I do not want to be exposed to. The warning of content respects me as a consumer, just as the writer is requesting respect for the LGBTQ community with in this story.

I read books from other African American women writers, who also write about LGBTQ themes, but they are respectful of the reader(consumer) to let them know that theme may be in the book, and it may offend some of the readers in their target group. I GREATLY appreciate the warning and skip those works while still supporting the writer. Alyssa Cole and Rebekah Weatherspoon are both writers who write heterosexual and homosexual romance, but the respect their readers.
Again, I think Theordora Taylor is a great writer, she has a way in make feel like you know her characters. You want the heroine to find herself, you hope that the lead man changes. you hope that these very imperfect people, find the happy ending that we all want, regardless of socio-economic status.

Another great story and narration

The narrator does an excellent job with Theodora stories. I can’t see anyone else narrating her stories! I love Theodora Taylor’s stories which I prefer on audible.

Hated this book

I hated this book. It just wasn’t doing it for like her other books do. I think this is the first book I Don’t like that she has written. The narrator as usual was incredible.

Misleading reviews

So I'm start by saying Keane is no Collin Fairgood, Lexi Rustenov, or Go Gutierrez but who is? However is he bad no. What I loved most about this story was most romances depict flawed hurt men who are emotionally unavailable and a woman who is so different but loving they fall for her. Lena is the emotionally unavailable one. Despite reviews saying differently she didnt encourage her child to do anything. ***SHE RESPECTED THEIR CHILD VOICE***. Lena isn't likeable to some because some ppl need the women to be super clingy damsels in distress. Lena would never be that.

Keane and Lena warts and all

Keane and Lena are now in my top five favorite couples from Theodora Taylor. I really enjoyed listening while taking care of daily errands. And I love Max...talk about plot twist! Clementine Dove did another phenomenal job at bringing the characters to life. Her accents were good! I loved how Boston impression. I look forward to more audible books from the best pair in romance literature!
