This is a psychological thriller where the listener or reader is challenged to follow what seem to be separate story threads. One centres on a caring obstetrics doctor who suffers a series of shocks and surprises which disrupt his superficially perfect life. The other is set in Eire, but figures a man from the USA living in a rural idyll and working as a bus driver. His marriage is also deteriorating with his wife's dementia. This story thread peels off the layers of veneer and we discover his true nature. He also comments on one of the main themes which is you don't know what goes on behind closed doors. The author gives detailed trigger warnings about the story content on her website. There are harrowing events described.
The title explains how these stories match up and the familial influences and coping. Tension is maintained with choosing who can be believed and who people really are. I found the resolution satisfying although initially unexpected. There are others in the series and it will be interesting to see if this standard is maintained.
The narrator did a good job of making male and females distinct whilst conveying appropriate emotion. She did not exaggerate the Irish accent too much when this was called for.
