About this listen

This beloved Swiss children's tale has been beloved by generations of children and adults. Orphan Heidi's life in the Alps with her grandfather, Peter the goatherd, and her friendship with Klara, her invalid playmate, is both poignant and heartwarming.

I loved this glorious, timeless and inspiring story as a child, and having revisited it recently on Audible as an adult, I found it so deeply moving that at intervals throughout the text was actually brought to tears. As deeply inspiring as I found this book, a childhood favourite of mine alongside Frances Hodgson Burnett's "A little princess", and which has shaped a lot of my ways as an adult, it has brought me nothing but pleasure to listen to it again now and share it with various children of my acquaintance, so that they too may be inspired by this timeless tale.
Only one slight improvement I feel might be suggested. The narrator, being an elderly lady with a deep gravelly voice, is perhaps not entirely perfectly suited to reading the words a child such as Heidi utters with such eagerness. It sounded a little strange to hear the piping words of a young child spoken in such deep gravelly tones. If there might have been two narrators, this could be easily remedied.
However this has not detracted from the pleasure I got from the story, and I shall listen to it again and again. The narrator's voice is perfect for the older characters in the story such as grandfather, Herr Sesemann, the grandmothers and Fraulein Rottonmeier. I feel that my enjoyment of this story, even though it was great, could have been further enhanced by having it read by an additional reader to this older lady; I would rather the younger characters' voices had been read by a young person in a higher voice. However I can see that this narrator's voice is well suited to this old and timeless tale with its slightly archaic language, as it makes me feel like a child being read to by a well loved grandmother, and has not detected from my overall enjoyment of the story.

A beautiful, moving tale

One of my favourite books of all time. I've probably read this book at least a hundred times before and bought the audiobook to have something feel good to fall asleep to. I ended up listening to the whole book the next day, as it is such a beautiful story and it's been a few years since I last read it. It was also a nice surprise that this audiobook contains part 2 in the Heidi series: Heidi - how she used what she learned, which is a great sequel and that I haven't read as many times.

Beautiful story for all ages, also contains part 2
