Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Solo Narration - Female, 2014

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

Critic reviews

"Great fun. . . . Though Heartburn bristles ferociously with wit, it's not lacking in soul." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Nora Ephron's first novel is warm, witty and wise." ( Harper's Bazaar)

Falling asleep with Meryl Street was a delight

Firstly the book wasn't so boring that it sent me to sleep. I just use audiobooks when I'm going to sleep. This was beautifully read. The best narration ever in my opinion.

witty, poignant, honest and entertaining

Ephron is a great writer anyway, but this very personal story couldn't be more engaging. it is intelligent without being off-putting Streep knows the character perfectly and gives as good a performance as the writing deserves.

Meryl Streep was petfect to read this!

Such a witty, bittersweet story. Loved the one liners and Meryls reading of it. Highly recommend.

Wonderful

This is a really sweet story, and Ephrons voice is so strong in it - the only thing that let it down was it felt like it ended incredibly abruptly, that and there are certain aspects of it that haven’t aged very well, descriptions of PoC characters & Streep putting on an accent to depict other ethnicities. Aside from that though I’d really recommend this if you’re just wanting something laid back and comforting that’s performed well!

Try not to get so judgy about some of the attitude

Loved Meryl Streep narration -yes she is an actor so we expect it to be a bit of a stage performance one woman show...so what it works. Get over yourself and the attitudes about women feminism marriage and place it in its era and put the 2000's out of your mind and just admire some of the classy sassy sarcastic writing and enjoy it. I laughed out loud multiple times and allowed some remarks to wash over me rather than launch into outrage and offence...I think if you can cope a bit of Joan Rivers like barbs you will like this.

Brilliant honest book about real life

This was just brilliant. Funny and honest.
Meryl Streep was just fabulous as she slowed down the reading. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Poor Rachel’s love life.

I enjoyed Meryl Streep’s voice as the reader of this unusual book, and in many ways it was entertaining but I got fed up with the endless title tattle of her complicated live life after a while and if it hadn’t been for her I would have stopped listening to it.
