About this listen

Billy’s not my baby daddy, but he doesn’t mind pretending to be....

I’m a Division I cheerleader with hopes of becoming a sports broadcaster. None of my plans for college include getting knocked up by a cheating ex who just got engaged to another girl.

When my father finds out I’m pregnant, he goes ballistic. That’s when my BFF, bad boy Billy Babcock, comes to my rescue and agrees to “take responsibility”.

Billy and I solidify our contract on a napkin—he’ll pretend to be my baby’s father, and I’ll help him clean up his image. The only problem is my father, the football coach, hates Billy. He warned me off dating players a long time ago, and he thinks Billy’s the biggest player out there.

Now that we’re in a “relationship”, Billy thinks we should spend some quality naked time together, but I’m worried about crossing that line. Because athletic guys with big muscles, intricate tattoos, and sexy smirks are my biggest weakness, and Billy ticks off all those boxes.

Can my football player “boyfriend” walk the straight and narrow for me? Or did I just get handed off from one heartbreaker to another?

Heartbreaker Handoff is an angsty friends-to-lovers forbidden romance featuring a sassy cheerleader who’s about to be a single mother and a criminally charming football player determined to prove he’s the man for her, one sizzling kiss at a time. Heartbreaker Handoff is a dual-POV stand-alone in the USA Today best-selling series Varsity Dads.

Book 5 of the Varsity Dads series follows Roxy & Billy who we have met in previous books. Roxy found out she was pregnant thanks to her cheating ex in the last book, in this one Billy steps up and to the outside world pretends to be the baby daddy to help Roxy out and during that time their friendship turns into more.

Initially I was loving this book, it was giving me exactly what I was looking for, it had great humour, the friendship connection between them was strong, they were supportive of each other, especially Billy with Roxy he didn't bat an eye at going with her to appointments and standing up to her dad for her etc, then at some point in the story it was like the author decided to give him a personality transplant and he went from openly communicating with Roxy to being closed off and secretive which just didn't work for me. I do think this book did an excellent job of portraying how difficult things between partners can get after having a baby, how the sleepless nights, work/school schedules etc, learning to navigate life with a whole new person in it and the hormonal changes a woman goes through alongside the physicality of giving birth can all have an impact on the strength and intimacy of a relationship and how if you don't communicate it can become a big problem.

I was also expecting more from the story when it came to Roxy's ex Ezra and I honestly think her dad owed Billy a bigger apology and acknowledgement than he gave him. Overall I liked the book it just lost it's way a bit for me towards the end and didn't deliver what I hoped. Ruby Corazon was a new narrator to me and I really enjoyed her performance, Alexander Cendese was great as always. 🌶🌶
