This is just a very well put together book on woodworking. It was one of the first that I got when I started in this hobby and I can not say enough good things about it. The book has just about everything you would want to know about as a person starting out in woodworking.

An excellent guide.

Covers it all, from a description of popular wood species, to the art of delicate inlays. While it may not show you how to create your first piece of furniture, it will give guidance on the various steps and problems along the way.

basic guide

Focused on doing most things by hand or with more general purpose woodworking tools. Really a great basic book so don't expect anything on jigs.

very useful book

Only reason I rated 4 stars was because I felt there could've been more projects. Also, it kind of rambled on about things that weren't that important. Good book learned a lot.

nice book

I loaned this book out to a friend, as they were interested in getting into woodworking. Needless to say, I never got the book back and really wanted to keep this in my arsenal. Has just about everything you want to know to get started - especially for someone like me. It goes into details and has a lot of good reference images - perfect for me as I'm a visual learner.

pretty good

After my grandpa passed away, I inherited all his woodworking equipment but had no idea how to use it or what to do with it. I figured this book would be a pretty good place to start and I was right- it's really helped. Even when I buy furniture now, after reading this book I can really spot the minute differences in quality of furniture.

overall great book

Well explained, well photographed. I'm a beginning woodworker and didn't have anything but the most basic knowledge (i.e. "That's made of wood alright") when I picked up this book. The first few pages were efficient at teaching me how woods are different and explained why wood does what it does. The following chapters led me to a basic understanding of woodworking tools and what they do, how they work etc. Then there were the practical projects in the latter half of the book. I don't have all the tools required to do most of them (including a plainer, or that special saw they use to cut the dovetail joints) but hopefully I'll be able to get them soon to complete the projects the book suggests.

Overall a great and very helpful to a beginner

must listen

If you're starting out or even doing this for a few years, I highly recommend you this book. I was pleasantly surprised at all the knowledge this book has to offer. The first thing this book gave me is a fundamental understanding of wood. The second chapter is all about safety. Then joints and their advantages and disadvantages, when to use one over the other. I feel that if you don't have this book you'll lack the principals of woodworking. If you aspire to making quality wood furniture then start by listening this book
