Publisher's Summary

What is the narcissism epidemic?

When our partner is a narcissist, only those who've actually experienced the madness will ever understand what we're going through. When Love Is a Lie is a straight-up, tell-all book about narcissism in relationships that skips the clinical bullshit to focus solely on the personal experience. A narrative that holds nothing back, Zari Ballard's story will educate, enlighten, and empower you to evaluate (and fully understand) the mind-boggling dysfunction in your own relationship. Compare her story to your own and watch what happens. As it has for thousands of abuse victims worldwide, When Love Is a Lie is going to resonate with you in ways that no other book about narcissism ever has.

Any relationship involving a person with a narcissistic personality disorder will inevitably take a dark turn. We stay in the relationship thinking we can fix this person or love him/her out of their bad behavior but the truth is that narcissists, sociopaths and psychopaths can never be fixed - not with love, therapy, or any magic pill. Life quickly becomes a roller coaster ride from hell without a harness and with Lucifer himself at the controls. If that sounds dramatic, then you've never loved a narcissist. If that sounds familiar, then this very special book may just change your life.

When Love Is a Lie breaks down the signs of a narcissistic personality and exposes the narcissist's way of thinking.

    "Excellent"

This book is skillfully written and very much validates the odd and uncaring behaviors, actions, and experiences a person has while involved in a relationship with a Cluster B individual. It was both shocking and saddening to understand the truth as I drew the parallels and heard every thought I ever had about my relationship described in this book. Also, the narrater's voice and reading style were perfect and engaging. That was an added bonus.

    "Greatfull to have found this!"

This book has been beneficial for myself and my children. I have just started NC with my children's father. I have been living a lie for what would be16 years on March 25, 2017. I am desperate to make it this time! I have tried leaving him several times throughout the years! He always weasels back in right when I have climbed out of the pain, bewilderment and financial ruin he left us in. It's amazing how cathartic I felt listening to this book! In no way am I happy other's have and are going through the exact same abuse my children and I have endured but knowing it has been very validating! I am not CRAZY or a SICK BITCH!

Zari touches anyone that has suffered at the hands of a narcissist. Brilliantly written and very insightful. Funny as well. A MUST read for anyone looking to escape the torment of a toxic relationship with a narcissist. It gave me the strength to go no contact. Best book on the subject that I've read so far.

This was perfect, about 99% of every detail in this book I related to 100%. I listened to the Audible version and the only thing was he voice of the reader sounded older than the author l... she read it fine just wish she was more relatable.

    "Is drama driving your relationship?"

I sought out this book because drama is driving my relationship. What Zari describes is a full on narcissist who she knew and was enmeshed with over a decade. I can't diagnose any one but I can decide if this drama just feels never ending and put a stop to it. Zari gives useful tips on identifying a narcissist and how to go 'no contact.' Overall the performance of the reading was flawless but the work itself was a little too long in places about the craziness of the relationship- I wanted more about dealing with 'no contact' and gaining back a sense of self.

"It was like someone wrote about my life!"

I am ashamed to say I rode the narcissistic roller coaster far too long. This book provides fantastic information that is helping my road to recovery. I read it over and over! The cursing in the book helps with my own anger. I really want to get to a place where I can put this behind me, and I am working on that. :)

I really liked how frank it was. Zari cusses just like we all do when we are a co dependent of a narcissist. I learned some really good things about narcissism and myself. Thank you for writing this. I recommended it to any victim of NPD.

"The guidance I needed to help overcome"
What was one of the most memorable moments of When Love Is a Lie?

I was not sure if my ex boyfriend was a narcissist. I had never had to really look into the matter before my ex. But in a recent terrible breakup my therapist recommended for me to look into the N personality disorder. When the author listed the traits of what her ex husband - such as the lying, the intentional chaos, his unwillingness to compromise, the inability to commit to a job (or anything really), and the "deer in the headlights look" (my ex would get that frequently, I used to call it "hollow eyes"), I felt an overwhelming sickness and yet relief to the point that I was shaking and crying. It made me feel "So it wasn't me, I wasn't crazy. It was him."

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This book is pretty heavy material, it takes time to absorb, as it can be an extremely difficult realization that you were with someone that never loved you the way you loved them. That the love was a lie. But I did finish it within a few days since my break up is fresh and I was looking for answers to his horrible disappearance, his last final words, the switch back into that distance 'cold' person that I felt I could not reach for his heart just wasn't there.

    Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for answers. I kept blaming myself, I had begged my ex to see a therapist with me, I couldn't understand how he had switched from being so warm and loving, telling me he wanted marriage, that I was special, that he was so in love with me, to suddenly a cold person with empty eyes. Our entire relationship had always been an insane rollercoaster, and he had always been extremely selfish, a huge liar, empty eyed, switching between throwing on romance to completely ignoring me, and the list just goes on... almost everything in this book made me realize what I was really dealing with. I was never a priority. And although it is so painful, this book allowed me to open my eyes and see my ex for what he truly was.
