Publisher's Summary

At long last, John Hope Bryant lays out five simple rules to provide a path to economic liberation for anyone in any situation. The Memo provides a simple path from financial literacy and mindset shifts to ownership, positive relationships, and a completely new attitude toward money. In a provocative exploration of the intersections of race and class, Bryant preaches the definitive conclusion that to be free, one must be economically liberated. Listeners will learn how to achieve economic power in the following chapters:

  • We live in a free enterprise system - embrace this.
  • Your mindset makes or loses you money and wealth.
  • Your relationships are your investments - your most important relationship is with yourself.
  • Don't "get a job" - create value. You are capital.
  • Spiritual capital is the start of true wealth.

Those who suffer from poverty haven't gotten "the memo" - until now. For decades, John Hope Bryant has reached out to the underserved in our "free enterprise" system. Through Operation HOPE, he has reached tens of thousands of people. In this work, he's found that most problems that stem from racism are directly linked to economic slavery. The five rules are spelled out clearly: Listeners must embrace the "free" in free enterprise, shift their mindset, build relationships, switch from working a job to actively creating value from within, and realize that they can never be truly wealthy without hope.

"Five Rules for How to Think "
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

A Person Very New to these Concepts or Thinking About Owning a Business for the first time

Has The Memo turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Yes.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was very dry, condescending at times, and did not do a great job of keeping the reader engaged.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment. I was hoping this book was going to provide actual tips on how to get from point a to point b. The result of this book was a lot of stereotypical stories related to economics and class in America. The author was more concerned on teaching people how to think, name dropping, and his story to success more than giving tangible advice that could be applicable for everyday use. Furthermore, there are moments were the author simplifies the American system forgetting that the system throws more than its share of curve balls to the average citizen.

    Any additional comments?

Yes, if you are looking for someone to get your mindset right then you can engage with this book. If you are looking for steps to assist you in owning your own business then this is a waste of time. If you are looking to pick up some more one liners and proverbs then this is a book filled with this to support your everyday conversation. For instance, " I take no as a vitamin."

    "Too Preachy"

I was very disappointed because I thought he was going to give actual tips. What the author did was pretty much lectured why the memo is important without giving substantial tools. His performance was very underwhelming in terms of a plethora of awkward pauses, choppy sentences in his delivery. I couldn't even listen to the last Chapter or last tip because it was so preachy.

    Any additional comments?

John Hope Bryant shares wisdom from a perspective of creating generational wealth. Many people were never taught on how to create the seeds needed to grow wealth. In this book he shares the foundation and resources needed to: 1. Change your mindset about finances 2. Take explicit action to make the change 3. To create goals to self sustain 4. Teach family and friends to do the same. He shares with you the resources and cites examples of people who have done it successfully. The goal of this book is to motivate one to take the first step which can be very hard and scary for someone who has never thought in this fashion. This is a book that should be gifted to friends, family and colleagues. Great book!
