Summary

The indispensable new work from the author of the international and Sunday Times best seller The Art of Thinking Clearly.

Have you ever....

  • Spent too long on a PowerPoint presentation?
  • Lost sight of what makes you happy?
  • Failed to reach a long-term goal?
  • Become infuriated by queuing, tax or parking tickets?
  • Broken a promise you knew you'd keep?

Since the dawn of civilisation, we've been asking ourselves what it means to live a good life: how should I live, what will truly make be happy, how much should I earn, how should I spend my time?

In the absence of a single simple answer, what we need is a toolkit of mental models, a guide to practical living. In The Art of the Good Life, you'll find 52 intellectual shortcuts for wiser thinking and better decisions at home and at work. They may not guarantee you a good life, but they'll give you a better chance.

One of the best audiobook this year

I do not read many self-help books. This book has a perfect blend of behavioural economics, psychology and philosophy. A must read in my opinion. The narrator is perfect for this book.

Outmoded

Some useful information but the author does himself no favours with his outmoded, patronising and sexist bias coming through.

Good but presumptuous and very opinionated

There is some great advice on this book, I’ve picked up a number of good tips. However, it seems the author is already coming from a privileged start (stock portfolio, fine wines, flying lessons), which makes some of the lessons a little harder to truly internalise. Maybe it’s because of his good advice that he has these benefits(!) but all the same it does blunt the delivery. He is also very dismissive of some activities and beliefs such as meditation, without really quoting any significant evidence to support the argument. It’s very opinionated; most of the time this is fine but it gets to be a bit like a very smart but slightly annoying colleague.

This book is pure gold

I couldn’t recommend it enough. It’s the compilation of many very sound principles. I’m definitely going to listen to it a second time.
