Summary

What does it take to win success and influence? Some people think that in today's hypercompetitive world, it's the tough, take-no-prisoners type who comes out on top. But in reality, argues New York Times best-selling author Dave Kerpen, it's actually those with the best people skills who win the day. Those who build the right relationships. Those who truly understand and connect with their colleagues, their customers, their partners. Those who can teach, lead, and inspire.

In a world where we are constantly connected and social media has become the primary way we communicate, the key to getting ahead is being the person others like, respect, and trust. Because no matter who you are or what profession you're in, success is contingent less on what you can do for yourself but on what other people are willing to do for you. Here, through 53 bite-sized, easy-to-execute, and often counterintuitive tips, you'll learn to master the 11 people skills that will get you more of what you want at work, at home, and in life. For example, you'll learn:

  • The single most important question you can ever ask to win attention in a meeting
  • The one simple key to networking that nobody talks about
  • How to remain top of mind for thousands of people every day
  • Why it usually pays to be the one to give the bad news
  • How to blow off the right people
  • And why, when in doubt, to buy him a bonsai

A book best described as "How to Win Friends and Influence People for today's world", The Art of People shows how to charm and win over anyone to be more successful at work and outside of it.

Critic reviews

"People skills - they can't be computerized, outsourced, or reduced to a rubric. That's why Dave Kerpen's The Art of People is more important now than ever - this book will teach you a set of irreplaceable skills that will help you in every area of your life. After all, what is more important - what will get you farther in life - than understanding and getting along with other people?" (Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell Is Human and Drive)

"Strong people skills are how I built my business. I find it's a common thread amongst all successful people, and no matter what level your people skills are at today, after reading this book you will see a dramatic improvement!" (Barbara Corcoran, star of ABC's Shark Tank, entrepreneur, & author of Shark Tales)

"Smart, funny, and immediately usable. In our fast paced world, we educate and train on technical skills, but neglect the greatest predictors of success: your ability to connect and influence others. In short, this is one of the few books that might actually get you a promotion, or a successful company of your own." (Shawn Achor, happiness researcher and New York Times best-selling author of The Happiness Advantage)

A Nice Audio Book.

I enjoyed listening to The Art of People. It was interesting. However in my personal opinion you can't beat Dale Carnegie's work: How To Win Friends And Influence People. That piece of work by Dale Carnegie will always be my favourite. I do take my hat off to Dave Kerpen though because he has introduced some new and interesting ideas and concepts. Overall it has been an interesting listen. So thank you to Mr Kerpen for producing this audio book.

This book nails it. Simple skills you can use to get people to like you right away. Recommend it.

Very shallow, no depth. For naive only

Super light reading. More like light magazine / article stories rather than book chapters. The author has the feeling that his readers are low intelligent beings, and he needs to teach them the very super basic principles in communicating. I do not recommend by any chance.

Excellent!!

Although no doubt written for an American audience, there is plenty of insightful and inspiring information which can be adapted and used the world over.

Overly simplistic, lacks depth

The ideas are solid but described only on a surface level. If you've never listened to a book on this subject then there is some value to learning these concepts but there are better books on the subject.

Great if U want to be an egomaniac

Great gems within but not my style. Reminds me of an over aggressive self promoting sales guys I tend to stay clear off. Not comparable with Dale or others greats.

Plenty of Valuable tidbits

The book itself was good, there's definitely a lot of valuable information and notes I took throughout. However, the title over promises a definitive or comprehensive guide, which the book is not. Valuable information, but slightly "soft" on delivery

Authentic and Fresh

I listen to a lot of books via Audible. Whenever the author narrates first hand, it takes the book to another level.

Kerpen does a great job weaving in concepts with his life experiences that many of us have forgotten about or are not consciously aware of as action items to get what we want in life.

This book is for everyone and I highly recommend it.

Just amazing

Ask better questions? Brilliant, often times we fumble through questioning to build rapport, most of us know there is better questions to ask.. but.. what are they? Look no further this book has those questions that build rapport fast and build lasting friendships.

Good beginning advice

The concepts are easy to follow, it’s mostly common knowledge applied towards affluent people in similar scenarios. Good advice but no major breakthroughs for me.

Excellent yet practical easy to follow concepts.

Great book demonstrating with actual real life examples of implementation. The Fast Actions Steps to Take at the end of each chapter are great ways to follow through.

Looking for more depth

A good book for basic social networking skills. It was pleasant and easy to listen to. However, more depth and structure to the content would provide a more rewarding experience.

Fresh Perspective

Great book! Just finished with the audio book. Excellent new perspective on my business that I honestly haven't been paying much attention to. Loved the short chapters that were right to the point. I really got a LOT out of this one. Going to start the other two now.
