Summary

Staying busy is easy. Staying well rested - now there's a challenge.

How can you keep your energy, happiness, creativity, and relationships fresh and thriving in the midst of never-ending family demands, career pressures, and the stress of everyday life? In Sacred Rest, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board-certified internal medicine doctor, reveals why rest can no longer remain optional.

Dr. Dalton-Smith shares seven types of rest she has found lacking in the lives of those she encounters in her clinical practice and research - physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, sensory, social, creative - and why a deficiency in any one of these types of rest can have unfavorable effects on your health, happiness, relationships, creativity, and productivity. Sacred Rest combines the science of rest, the spirituality of rest, the gifts of rest, and the resulting fruit of rest. It shows rest as something sacred, valuable, and worthy of our respect.

By combining scientific research with personal stories, spiritual insight, and practical next steps, Sacred Rest gives the weary permission to embrace rest, set boundaries, and seek sanctuary without any guilt, shame, or fear.

Critic reviews

"'Once you get a taste of a well-rested life, nothing else will satisfy.' That quote is a nibble of the masterpiece you will feast on in Saundra-Dalton Smith's book Sacred Rest. Through a well-balanced weaving of her life's stories, substantiated research, and inspired selection of Scriptures, Saundra has created a perfect mix for challenging each reader to find their place of rest. I highly recommend this book as it's chock full of practical tips and you'll want to buy ten more for your family and friends, or use it for a book club or Bible Study." helpful but heavy on the religion

The book is very engaging and insightful with practical suggestions and takeways that can really help understand and increase rest. I really like the book from that persepctive.

However, the deeper into the book, the more the religious themes comes up. There are lots of mentions of Christian stories and bibical quotes which is really off-putting and a bit thoughtless. It feels like really thoughtless to assume all readers would hold the same beliefs as the author and really inappropriate to include in this type of book.

Overall I am enjoying the book and finding it helpful but I just wish she would stop harping on about god.

A really valuable book, but be aware is Christian

First half of the book really good, very valuable, you should definitely buy this book.

Second half quotes heavily from the bible, frequent mentions of God and Jesus, biblical stories and so on. I would describe myself as spiritual not specifically Christian and I found the continual theme and mentions of the bible jarring and inescapable. I will listen again but stop at the end of part one.

Very timely reminders

I listened to this on a journey to and back from London, very engaging and full of thought provoking information as well as gentle suggestions on how to incorporate rest into your life and ultimately find that glow that you've lost. Warning; the author is religious and especially towards the end of the book leans heavily on her religious beliefs. I personally am not and can interpret what she is saying through my own lense of spirituality, but for some this may be a contentious point.

A welcomed insight to rest

I found this book very in lighting and made me question how I rest .

It was a breathe of real common sense and provided insight to what true test is .

Disappointing

So much fantastic advice here. It's written through a religious lens from the beginning, and at first seems inclusive of non-Christian readers. The second half of the book is much more dogmatic and the writer's insistence on quoting scripture is distracting which is a shame. Would have given it 5 stars if it had been more inclusive.

Hugely religious after a few chapters

loses the run off itself a few chapters in when it begins to focus on God. I'm open minded but it didn't get to the points which were set up at the start

Religion all the way

Not much information to draw practical application and religion pushed too much. I hoped more of scientific view, which were seen at the beginning, but later lost in religious theme.

Lacks practical advices

The first and third parts of the book were the ones I was really looking forward to, but I have to admit I was disappointed.
Not only the 3rd part is extremely short (1 Chapter), but the 1st one, which I thought would provide me with numerous practical and step by step tips didn't help much.
The book redirects us to the Rest quiz to help us identify the types of rest we need, but then merely offers 2 or 3 vague and unclear tips for each type.
There is only one chapter per type of rest (7 in total), and the tips/solutions are only mentioned briefly at the very end of each chapter (Today's Application), which is definitely not enough to "recover your life, renew your energy and restore your sanity".

... Nevertheless, I'll try to listen to the book again and see what else I can get from it.

religious threads

I mistakenly didn't expect this to contain such a prevalent thread of religious propaganda. I am a spiritual person, but this has a lot of bible quotes and an insistence that without a love of jesus, you cannot heal. I am so disappointed as I bought this book in great hope following hearing an interview with the author which stressed the different types of rest. Perhaps I would be less put off if this relationship with God had been kept for the spiritual chapter alone, but it isn't. I respect the right to religious and spiritual freedom and feel the element of spirituality could and should have been addressed in a more eclectic way. I have four hours remaining on my audiobook and fear I will be leaving it without bothering to hear them.
