Publisher's Summary

What if you could defuse tension and create accord in even the most volatile situations - just by changing the way you spoke? Over the past 35 years, Marshall Rosenberg has done just that, peacefully resolving conflicts in families, schools, businesses, and governments in 30 countries all over the world. On Nonviolent Communication, this renowned peacemaker presents his complete system for speaking our deepest truths, addressing our unrecognized needs and emotions, and honoring those same concerns in others. With this adaptation of the best-selling book of the same title, Marshall Rosenberg teaches in his own words:

  • Observations, feelings, needs, and requests - how to apply the four-step process of Nonviolent Communication to every dialogue we engage in
  • Overcoming the blocks to compassion - and opening to our natural desire to enrich the lives of those around us
  • How to use empathy to safely confront anger, fear, and other powerful emotions

Here is a definitive audio training workshop on Marshall Rosenberg's proven methods for "resolving the unresolvable" through Nonviolent Communication.

    "Potentially life changing"

I've listened to it twice in a row. There are many other great audiobooks on audible that will enrich your life, by Thich Nhat Hanh, Eckhart Tolle, Tara Brach and many more from Sounds True, and you should check those out too. But on the subject of communication, and more widely on engaging genuinely with other people and making yours and their lives richer, this book held several epiphanies for me, and will be a reference often returned to in the future. Do listen to it!

A fascinating and very simple way of looking at our approaches of how we communicate with people. It has given me a new outlook on how I interact with people now and find out what's alive in us all. I thankyou Marshall 😊

Undoubtedly one of the most profound learnings of my 45 year old life. If you have ever expressed your feelings and met with a defensive or aggressive response this is for you. If you want to communicate better this is for you.

"I instinctively distrust self help books. This book is different."

This book exposes some very deep and troubling approaches we take when dealing with each other in every day life. We self sabotage our communications by building walls that have no purpose. This book effortlessly tears down these emotional constructs, biases and shines a light on a far more productive and frankly beautiful approach that empowers and centres us. Seriously worth the time. I will read it again and again.

I have read most of Marshall Rosenberg's books. Every one is a treasure. I have them in the Kindle and Audio format. They explain a peaceful solution to different views in different scenarios. I feel the books have been an education to me and would be to anyone else who wishes to communicate more effectively and to listen clearly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    "Good introduction to NVC"
Would you consider the audio edition of Nonviolent Communication to be better than the print version?

Yes. It's important to hear Marshall's voice as this gives a real feeling of how one might speak in a NVC way.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Nonviolent Communication?

The scenarios that illustrate the main features of NVC

Have you listened to any of Marshall Rosenberg’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't heard other books read by the same author.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Needing to communicate.

    "insightful and enlightening"

i have found this audio book one of the most insightful and enlightening i have listened to.
The delivery and content are presented in a way that is easily relatable. The examples are clarifying. I have listened to it numerous times as I find the authors voice and cadence to be authorative and refreshing.
I am doing my best to practice this form of communication to replace what has gone before.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting to improve their communication and relationships.

"Relevant to a Job Hopper/3X Married"

My 3rd wife and I have been progressively fighting for months. I've been unemployed for six months. I couldn't say anything to her at all without any conversation nose diving. Before I was even 100% done listening to Violent Commutation, I had a 90 minute healing, positive, loving and productive conversation with my her. Not one raised eyebrow or voice. I have tried thousands of dollars worth of counseling, self help and mentoring. This not only works, but is the only approach that I can ever see working. It simply washes away your prejudice by asking what you need.

If you twist my arm for a suggestion, I would change the sound quality so there is less mouth noises and speed up his message, which I simply did in the app.

    Brilliant!

    Thank you!

"Very helpful for personal & professional conflicts"

Wonderful book. I only give it a lower score for performance because the author/reader does a funny voice every time he is quoting someone else. It draws me out of the moment. This book has already helped me manage a few potential conflicts in my personal and professional life. I assigned it to one of my managers to help her talk to employees in a more healthy and helpful way.

"This is an amazing life changing book!!!"
    Any additional comments?

I would like to give it 100 starts. After just only 2 hours of listening to the book, I started using it with my children (9 and 12 year-old boys). I found online a list of needs and feelings, told everyone in the family that I’m learning a new way of speaking so, if they all could please be patient with me while I am looking for my needs and feelings to express what I would like to say. I resolved every single conflict boys had while with me. There was no need for negative consequences. It is amazing. My 12 year-old had a lot of negativity in him and luck of self-esteem. It was breaking my heart, to not be able to help him. We did affirmations every morning, meditation, manifestation, countless hours of talking about power of thought and choices that only he can make. But nothing would really help him fully enjoy his life. This book teaches how to express your care to a person and what astonishing results come after when a person realizes that someone really cares about his/her needs. I realized that even after all the work I have done with my child, he still thought that no one cared and understood what he wanted. But when I started using words “your needs” over and over, he knew that I am here for him, for his needs and feelings and not just lecturing him about what he should do in order to feel better. As a result, I don’t have to ask kids twice for anything (taking garbage out, clean their room, make their beds). They feel good and they want to help me with everything. So far it’s been only 6 days since I started working with the book, and I can totally see a difference in myself. I love the way I feel, I love the way I communicate with people (including my husband), I love that I can express my own feelings and needs without blaming anyone or feeling guilty about it. This book is an answer from heaven that I was begging for. It did change my life in such a short time and I am very grateful it found me (or I found it :) ) Thank you Dr.Rosenberg from all my heart!

"I found this book to be like the Rosetta Stone"

I found this book to be life changing. It is like the Rosetta Stone, in that so many areas of my life are able to be decoded, unpacked in a framework that works and makes sense. If I was ever in a position where I could take only one audiobook, this would be it.

The content of this book is excellent. However, the narration is unbearable because of mouth noises (aka, mouth clicks). It needs to reproduced with a professional narrator.

"Good Concept, Hard To Make It A Habit AWFUL readin"
Would you try another book from Marshall Rosenberg and/or Marshall Rosenberg?

The book itself has a great concept. It is hard to make it an everyday habit though especially if everyone else around you doesn't do the same. You practice for a while then it gets forgotten because nobody around you does the same and you just go back to your own ways.

What didn’t you like about Marshall Rosenberg’s performance?

He should have picked some professional reader. It was so slow, that I almost fell asleep listening (I had to speed it up for 1.5x the speed to make it normal) and it was very "wet", you hear every breath, swallow, mouth noise in the reading. Something that I don't want to hear loud in my ears. For this reason, I don't recommend this audio book to anyone, I would advise to read the book itself. It's a good book.

    "Best book I've listen."
Would you listen to Nonviolent Communication again? Why?

Something to listen multiple times to deeply study and learn. After several great books about human communication and cooperation this goes into center of core. <3

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The lifetime studying and followed deep understanding which has basis on family tradition over generations in Marshalls family. And totally ego free presentations of the text.

    Any additional comments?

This is someting for everyone to understand better your own needs and other people needs and create best possible cooperation with anyone and everyone.

"A (Much-Needed) Fred Rogers for Adults"

What attracts me most to Rosenberg’s NVC is the simplicity of the teachings and the their immediate applicability to a broad spectrum of interpersonal scenarios (intimate, professional, child/parent, etc.). What surprised me most about NVC is its applicability to one’s self: how that negative backtalk that instinctively occurs (in most all of) our own minds (I strongly believe) is indeed a form of violence that--upon correction and improvement--can lead to better self-knowledge and ultimately a stronger society. (Sure: that seems like lofty idealism, but certainly Rosenberg’s approach can do no harm.) Rosenberg’s temperament is well-suited for this narration (which is well-adapted from the print edition), creating an intimate space between the author and the listener for learning and self-discovery. My pocket notes below (tl;dr) for reference.
    ____________________

    - Stop viewing violence as a pathology. View it as a mis-education.
    - ‘Out beyond ideas of right and wrong doing, there is a field. I will meet you there.’ - Rumi
    - Current attention is paid to levels or right and wrongness, not whether life is being served or not
    - The downfall of society will not be due to evil forces and their counterparts, but due to acquiescent subservient minds
    - We want those who we want to act to do so from intrinsic motivation (i.e. ‘Punished by Rewards’). Demands only promote compliance or rebellion
    - Take responsibility for your own feelings. ‘I feel X because I…’
    - When expressing your own needs, express via a ‘Santa Claus’ attitude, not a ‘Kick Me’ attitude
    - Indian ‘vas’: my needs are met
    - Empathy: getting to others’ needs. Don’t put your ‘buts’ in front of an angry person.
    - Self-compassion: anything worth doing is worth doing poorly. You’ll never fall out of bed if you sleep on the floor.
    - The difference between self-judgment and mourning/self-forgiveness. Find the unmet need and connect to it.
    - Never use blameful or shaming language with yourself. You’re not getting closer to understanding your needs.
    - Turn the ‘shoulds/musts’ actions of your life into ‘choose/because’ wants. Be honest with yourself..
    - Punitive force undercuts the intrinsic motivation of the actor--avoid. Counter-example: the ‘Do Nothing’ room that allows unmotivated students to voluntarily remove themselves from becoming a distraction
    - Expressing anger: no one makes you feel the way you do. Focus on unmet needs. Take your time.
    - Praise must be very specific as to what needs of yours our being met by both giving and receiving parties. When receiving praise, do not fall into traps of egotism or false humility. Give and receive praise with joy.
    - ‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light--not our darkness--that frightens us. You are a child of God, your playing small does not serve the world. As we let our own light shine, we consciously let other people do the same.’ -- Marianne Williamson (paraphrased)
    - Do not condition those around you to be praise-seeking.
