Summary

A completely accessible and practical guide to nurturing your child using simple Buddhist practices, become a calmer and happier mother with the best-selling book, Buddhism for Mothers. Buddhism for Mothers discusses Buddhist teachings as applied to the everyday challenges of bringing up children. Parenthood can be a time of great inner turmoil for a woman yet parenting books invariably focus on nurturing children rather than the mothers who struggle to raise them. This book is different. It is a book for mothers.

Buddhism for Mothers explores the potential to be with your children in the all-important present moment; to gain the most joy out of being with them. How can this be done calmly and with a minimum of anger, worry and negative thinking? How can mothers negotiate the changed conditions of their relationships with partners, family and even with friends?

Using Buddhist practices, Sarah Napthali offers ways of coping with the day-to-day challenges of motherhood. Ways that also allow space for the deeper reflections about who we are and what makes us happy. By acknowledging the sorrows as well as the joys of mothering Buddhism for Mothers can help you shift your perspective so that your mind actually helps you through your day rather than dragging you down. This is Buddhism at its most accessible, applied to the daily realities of ordinary parents.

Easy Listening

I listened to this whilst Breastfeeding and it was a good choice as it was easy listening. The content was interesting but if you've read books on Buddhism before, you will likely have already pieced this together.

A must read book for mothers

If you could sum up Buddhism for Mothers in three words, what would they be?

A different approach to motherhood and life

What other book might you compare Buddhism for Mothers to, and why?

I have read many many books on gentle parenting and parenting in general, but no other book has had such a great effect on me. It helped me to enjoy life, kids, even my kids trantrums are now a moment to learn and not to get nervous as I did before. I don't know why I didnt know about this book when I was pregnat!

Which character – as performed by Rebecca Macauley – was your favourite?

Neutral calm voice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I just heard it when taking my kids for a walk in the buggy. It was more like a spa session hearing this book!

Any additional comments?

Is not a religious book, it shows you how to approach life in a more mindfull and loving way.

the greatest message one can get

Sarah Napthali communicates buddhism with such actualism and ease, it can reach anyone who stops and listens. Sure, there are many ways to this, many takes on buddhism, but implementing it into our lives for not just our but for others’ sake and the greater good takes effort. Well, if someone has that effort, here’s the manual.

Inspiring and wonderful introduction to Buddhism

Listened to this book while feeding 4 month old baby to sleep each night. It has helped me so much already with coping with motherhood and looking at my reactions to situations (really useful when dealing with a 2 year olds tantrums!). Great section at the end with further books to read. I'll be looking at all of them. This book has made me enjoy my maternity and time with children so much. I've never read anything about Buddhism before, this is hopefully the start of a great journey.
