Summary

Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives. In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools---affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques---that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

the most important book

Thank you.
Book was an eye-opener. By reading this book I believe I finally know where my path begins. it is like I got that corner piece puzzle from where the image begins to take shape and form. Scientifically were well backed up, at times little to much - I am looking forward to reading it again and I am taking my time this time around.

Truly eye opening and healing

I’m in recovery from complex PTSD after an event finally triggered me to find out about codependency from a narcissistic mother. This book explains so much about how I have developed and goes into such detail about each developmental stage as you grow up. It goes on to explain what’s involved to heal with many practical meditations outlined. There is so much in here I feel the need to listen again and take notes and also use the exercises. Thank you for providing some really ahaaaa moments especially when it comes to thinking about our calling.

Everyone should read this book

This is an excellent understanding of wounding, the trauma that arises as a result of these wounds & how individuals pattern thereafter in an attempt to function.

Become the new updated you

If you feel REPRESSED in any way whatsoever, then this book is a must, you will come to UNDERSTAND the SHAME, guilt and trauma you are SELF INFLICTING.

Having lived my whole life wrapped in shame and constant fear; hiding and running, lying and cheating, not being true to myself for fear of judgement.

Having lived this way since the age of about 7-8 years old, right up until the age of 46. I got to the point where I no longer had the energy to continue down this path, I was suicidal, depressed, my body hurt, my mind hurt more, no friends since the age of about 11 years old, my family had disowned me, because they couldn’t handle the fact that my uncle abused me as a child; it was easier to reject the cowardly, shame ridden boy in a man’s body.

I really hit rock bottom, I realised the NHS wasn’t interested in helping me, years stuck in a system that seemed to look for any excuse to make you wait for ever. I know that it was do or die, I started meditating, eating better, but most importantly I invested all my time into learning why I had ended up so broken.

Having read 100s of books, this is one of the best reads so far, I have discovered answers, I have come to understand that I am NOT RESPONSIBLE for who I am, that decision was taken away from me, like all of us, taken by my parents, grandparents, teachers etc. They broke me with the way they responded to an innocent child, they punished my innocence, punished my curiosity, THEY repressed me. NO longer was I the one responsible for this mess. That is very EMPOWERING.

What have you got to lose by reading this book? A few hours of your miserable existence, what have you got to gain? YOUR LIFE.

Good book, good read

Like the ideas in this book, although there are some false ideas about God. Good meditations.

Enlightening

I would highly recommend this book, it explains so clearly the dynamics of families and gives a clear path to untangle our ‘false’ selves, and start to heal and find equanimity.
