Summary

The highly anticipated seventh novel in the bestselling DI Nick Dixon Crime Series.

A man has been mutilated and left to drown on the incoming tide, handcuffed in his van. With the murder bearing a striking resemblance to a string of sadistic killings carried out with surgical precision in 1990s gangland Manchester, it can mean only one thing: the killer is back.

Transferred to the Major Investigation Team, DI Nick Dixon is assigned a new partner and sent to Manchester. Meanwhile, the gruesome murders in Somerset continue.

Convinced of a connection with the unsolved gangland killings, and with the odds stacked against him, Dixon takes the ultimate gamble, determined to bring the killer to justice before it's too late.

But is it the same killer? If so, why has he resurfaced now? And how many more must die?

Gave up

I'm sure the story was good but the narrator was awful - every descriptive sentence delivered like some profound, earth-shattering information was being delivered, character voices equally poor, especially falsetto for female characters. First book I've ever given up on.

nothing i can say that havent said before. i love tgese books, well constructed stories with characters you grow with and like and a competent narrator. if you liked PD James Adam Dalgliesh then you will probably enjpy these books. Can be read independently but would advise to read in order.

Disappointed

Having read and enjoyed the previous 6 books I was looking forward to listening to book 7. Unfortunately Napolean Ryan's voice was nothing like Nick Dixon's voice that was in my head! I did not finish listening to the book but I am looking forward to reading it.

More than simple just listening

I found this story more than some thing to listen to it had my mind guessing what happens next. It was just too interesting to stop listening and switch it off. Look forward to the next story.

Captivating<br />

Couldn't stop listening once I'd started. I wanted to go on to the next part and the next part,.......
The story line was amazing. and thrilling right to the end where there was a possible happy ending waiting.

Fantastic narrators. Liked the use of actual females playing female parts. That said the main narrator did wonderfully well at creating the other characters voices as well as the telling of the story.

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful story so fantastically presented.

Awful narration

Despite reading other reviews that said this I chose to ignore them. They were right! I tried, but after getting a quarter of the way through the book it was drawing my attention away from the story to such a degree that it ruined it for me.

Good story but sadly narration was boring

First time I’ve heard this guy narrate.
Voices were unrealistic and deadpan. Especially the main characters nick and Jane.
Would not purchase another book narrated by him.
Story was well thought out and well written.

A disappointing listen.

What might have been a reasonable piece of detective fiction was spoilt by inept narration. Even the most mundane utterance made by the main character was delivered in the style of a Shakespearian actor whilst the female characters all sounded the same and gave the impression of being strangled whilst speaking. I found these peculiarities quite offputting and trust that they are not features of all of this author's novels.

Whereas the author was keen to show his mastery of the geography of West and North Somerset, his command of police procedure seemed a little shaky. The attempted escape by the villain at the end of the novel was quite farcical, given that he was surrounded by a small army of policeman.

I persevered to the end of the story but did not really enjoy the experience.

Another excellent DI Nick Dixon suspense mystery!

The publisher's summary provides all of the appropriate background to Heads or Tails which is Book 7 in the Detective Inspector Nick Dixon series by British author Damien Boyd. The novel, like the prior 6 in the series, has lots of action and intense suspense. It is a fast moving mystery with realistic and likable characters (except for the bad guys). Heads of Tails is an outstanding police procedural. Napoleon Ryan narrates very well.

Great book and awesome narration..

I found this to be a little more confusing than the other 6 books in the series but it didn’t lose me completely, which was good. And one reviewer said there were too many characters in this and I have to agree. It could have done with about 10 fewer characters.

BUT, overall it was a great story about a serial killer who stopped killing then years and years later a copycat took his place, with details of the first killer’s victims that were never released to the public. The two killed buy stabbing their victims in the neck and drilling a hole right between their eyes, and there was a reason for that, you’ll have to read the book to find out why they killed that way.

Again, I gotta tell ya’ that I hate when you like a character and the author kills them off. This character wasn’t just in the book for a minute he was in it for most of the book. I was really bummed about that. No warning, no nothing, just BOOM he’s dead.

As always, there was no sex in this, I think a couple of pecks on the cheek between Dixon and Jane, our hero and heroine. And the F-bomb was used 24 times.

As to the narrator: Phenomenal! Napoleon Ryan laughed, cried, whispered, yelled, groaned, everything the book called for. I never get tired of listening to him. And the women sound exactly like women, not like a man trying to do a woman’s voice. He’s incredible.

One of the best current British Crime Novelists

I am a big fan of Peter Robinson and I am current on all his books. I hate waiting a year for the next one to come out. I stumbled on Damien Boyd's work about 2 years ago and I think he is fast approaching Peter Robinson's caliber of crime fiction. Now I there are two books in British Crime Fiction I can look forward to every year.
I need also mention that Napoleon Ryan is an excellent narrator and really adds to the enjoyability of the series. Audible 20.

Good but....

I’ve enjoyed this series, but I feel that the focus on Nick’s diabetes and Monty his dog is a bit distracting.

Narration makes a difference

This is my 3rd time trying to listen to this story. The narration was too distracting for me to the point of not being able to follow the characters and the plot. I like this author and will purchase hard copy of this book and steer away from this narrator for this type of story

Each book gets better

Really enjoyed this one. I am becoming very fond of the main characters . Starting this book I had forgotten the very particular cadence that the narrator Napoleon Ryan has but once you get used to it it's fine he is also brilliant at regional accents . Looking forward to the next one.
