Summary

Alex Bledsoe continues the adventures of freelance sword jockey Eddie LaCrosse in the thrilling He Drank, and Saw the Spider.

After he fails to save a stranger from being mauled to death by a bear, a young mercenary is saddled with the baby girl the man died to protect. He leaves her with a kindly shepherd family and goes on with his violent life.

Now, 16 years later, that young mercenary has grown up to become cynical sword jockey Eddie LaCrosse. When his vacation travels bring him back to that same part of the world, he can't resist trying to discover what has become of the mysterious infant.

He finds that the child, now a lovely young teenager named Isadora, is at the center of a complicated web of intrigue involving two feuding kings, a smitten prince, a powerful sorceress, an inhuman monster, and long-buried secrets too shocking to imagine. And once again she needs his help.

They say a spider in your cup will poison you but only if you see it. Eddie, helped by his smart, resourceful girlfriend Liz, must look through the dregs of the past to find the truth about the present - and risk what might happen if he, too, sees the spider.

Funny, intelligent and read by the best!

I have listened to the entire series back to back with as little down time as I could manage. Stefan Rudnicki’s voice is deep and buttery. The stories of Eddie the Sword Jockeys adventures will keep you laughing and begging for more. The mysteries are engrossing and hilarious or and plenty of swash buckling for the guys. Well done Alex Bledsoe!

winning combo!

Bledsoe and Rudnicki are a fantastic pairing! Each is talented on their own, but together they each shine just a little more. I happily follow both their works at this point.

This series is best enjoyed from the start, as there are references to what came before. Yet each of also it's own mystery, and Bledsoe is skilled at dropping in just enough reference that a newcomer can get the joke, if a beat behind.

There stories pull us in, and keep us listening, and likely even laughing, along with the characters and writer.

A delightful mix of a medieval setting with 20th century hard boiled mystery, with a smattering of anachronistic references for the modern reader's fancy and sensibilities. Highly recommended!

Still as good as the first book!

Have listened to series at least twice now and still love the mix of mystery, magic, action, and personal insight. Sad it had to end but what a great one to end on!

love how it's told

I love how the author paints a story with words. I'd love for Alex to pay an artist to give us faces to all these characters.

Not for everyone, nothing is. fits me like a glove

Enough of the familiar caricature to draw you back. Plenty of new caricature to make you want to know more. The author weaves a completely separate world everytime yet its always familiar. Sad the series seems to be over. Leaves me wanting another story of Eddie's life.

old fashioned fun

This is not an overly sophisticated literary work. This is a fun series that moves right along something akin to an old fashioned comic book hero without the superpowers. This series isn't gonna change the world, but it can change your attitude for the day.

the final book in the series

the author had a good run it was probably good that he ended it when he did the context of the story was good detective noir with fantasy and swords but in the modern world it would not be too politically correct even though he had a lot of strong female characters and his main character treated people of different backgrounds with compassion and understanding it kind of ran its course never say never though he may pick up the pen again

Very enjoyable series

I've enjoyed all 5 books. I'm a bit sad that there doesn't seem to be a book 6. Since book 5 is dated 2014, I'm guessing no more in this series??? Rudnicki does an excellent job narrating. The story is interesting and the characters are excellent. I'll look for more books by Alex Bledsoe.
