Harry Potter like you’ve never heard it before

As a mother of elementary school children, nothing delights me more than seeing my kids begin to fall in love with the stories that empowered and inspired me when I was young. What’s even more special is that with this new full-cast audio edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, new audiences and established fans (like me!) will find it equally enchanting. The breathtaking sound design, immersive score, and outstanding performances by hundreds of actors had my kids on the edge of their seats, and I was squealing with delight right alongside them. Even if you know everything there is to know about Harry Potter, you’ve never heard it quite like this—and if you’re new to the stories, there has never been a better way to dive in. —Esther B., Audible Editor

I have been waiting and longing for this full cast version ever since I heard it's announcement. I've grown up with Harry Potter in all of it's forms, read the books myself and listenes to the Stephen Fry audiobooks more times that I can count - so I was so excited for a full cast version. But I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed with the performance. I feel like they've added waaay to many backgrounds noises in order to make the listener feel as if they are in the story. I don't need constant horns honking, dogs barking or car alarms going off while at the same time there are notices of crowds and chirping birds to understand that the scene is taking place outdoors. At the same time they've not added the jingles of keys when a door is opened. I feel that they've at times missed what sounds to focus on and added too many layers which become quite overwhelming. Especially since many times the volume on these sounds are overpowering the narrator's voice. When they've containeded the background sounds to what's actually happening it is amazing, but it's more times than not that they've missed the mark. The characters breathe or grunt A LOT so the listener knows they're there, but it just feels so unnatural? I didn't know all the characters in Harry Potter has health issues making them all out of breath?

I am also a bit disappointed with the narrator's part as the pace often is faster compared to the full cast's pace. It makes her parts feel rushed rather than a comforting narrator that's by your side, telling you a story.

It is really nice with a full cast version (and the full cast is great!), but I think they've outdone themselves in their wish to make it epic. Instead it feels a bit stressed out and overwhelming. The Stephen Fry version will therefore still be my preferred version of Harry Potter as that is the gentle mental hug I'm expecting when reading/listening to/watching Harry Potter.
