About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

10,000 miles. 16 countries. 352 days.

Hardest Geezer, Russ Cook, is the first person to run the entire length of Africa. From his starting point in Cape Agulhas, South Africa, through sandstorms in the Sahara Desert, rainforests, mountain ranges and long empty roads stretched out for miles in front of him, Russ ran the equivalent of 386 marathons finally crossing the finish line in Tunisia 50 weeks later.

Attempted kidnaps, being held at gunpoint in an armed robbery and the whole challenge left hanging in the balance when he was denied the right to cross Algeria, Russ never once contemplated giving up. When he crossed the finish line in Ras Angela, he did so with the eyes of the world on him.

Africa may have been his most physical challenge yet but it certainly wasn’t his first: he’s broken the record for the fastest car-pulling marathon and been buried alive for a week with nothing but water and a camera to record the experience.

In Hardest Geezer: Running Africa, Russ Cook shares how he turned his life around to face these challenges and shares his motivations and tales of incredible determination, sheer grit and endurance.

‘You get one chance at life. Go and have a stab at it.’

I watched every video on youtube, and this book gives some better and unfiltered insights into his views throughout, and he explains in detail, what happened during the kidnapping. I was close to tears hearing some of the profound realisations he had during moments of adversity, and how his experiences in africa impacted his perception of his entire life, and how they produced moments of clarity of the things that mattered.

I dont think there will be a more impressive feat of endurance in my life time, and feel privaleged to have watched and followed it throughout. The shared fear that it simply wasnt possible at times, the shear physical strain this man endured. I dont truley admire many people, but this guy is deservedly one of them.

He hasnt simply built himself a platform to say "look at me, look at what I did", he seems to be using it to spread a positive message about where youngsters can healthily focus their energy, and seems to be proactive in using the fame to promote the charity and raise awareness to help others.

a refresh on the awe I experienced watching the journey on youtube.

Russ reads it himself so it just feels like your with him at times. His to the point nature of even writing the book comes across and its a listen where you can feel the emotion and challenges along the way. A great listen if your procrastinating or running or gifting. Highly recommend
