I don’t know how Sara Paretsky does it, but the fast pace of this novel never falters.I was glued to the story from beginning to end, with the nail- biting climax thrown in. I admit to having a very soft spot for V.I. Warshawski, and a fond regard for her big- hearted neighbour, Mr Contraris - not to speak of the dogs, Mitch and Pepe..
There is more: a critique of Capitalism and greed: and social concern for the underdogs in society.
Vic, our endlessly resourceful heroine, really is indestructible!

as usual, VI was fighting impossible odds, getting damaged but fighting for right. a convoluted story which came together at the end. I would have preferred the rogue cop to be brought to justice rather than accidentally dying.
