Excellent 'page turner' as it were

Excellently read and gripping tale combined to make this a real hit for me - the character voices were superb and I look forward to listening to the next in the series.

But slow in places.

Good book but the narrative of the families could be slow and irritating. Otherwise well written and engaging.
Thumbs up.

Hard Landing is Easy Listening

The beginning of the famous Dan Shepherd is a very decent thriller from Stephen Leather. I personally enjoyed the additional length which was largely used to build the atmosphere of the prison within which so much of the book is set. The juxtaposition of the modern luxuries prisoners enjoy with the genuine misery of a caged existence was built carefully and that background served the characters well.

I thought that the narration was decent though the recording is a bit odd with scene and chapter changes for example rolling instantly without a pause at times.

Largely this is a gritty prison / crime drama and is very well done. Towards the end I thought the author stretched credibility a little and the SAS characters were jettisoned in very quickly compared to the rest with just a hint of caricature about them. So, not perfect and at times not fast-moving but still hugely listenable and I will definitely be returning to this series in the future.

Fantastic first book. I love Shepherd!

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed listening to this audio book. Dan shepherd as a character is entertaining, gritty, intelligent and humble. I loved the storyline, and found it to be exciting and quite gripping at some points.

Being an undercover cop working in a prison under the guise of a convicted armed robber to me sounded like a must listen, and boy how right I was. This book exceeded all my expectations of an action packed thriller and I would even rank it up there in my top 20 listens category. I was a little unsure before I listened about the narrator, as I am a firm Paul Thornley fan and was certain he was unmatched in narrating as an ex SAS soldier. How wrong wasI! Martyn Reed is a brilliant narrator and I really enjoyed listening to his telling of this story.

A good all rounder, this book pulls no punches. Buy it, listen to it, then 5 star rate it. Guaranteed to be a great listen. 10/10.

Great story

Excellent story and great plot gripping to the end only spoilt by the narrator and his inability to do decent accents for the characters without them all sounding the same.
