The next gritty instalment

Same characters from the first book, but the focus is on a new batch of heroes.. Exactly the same gritty tone as the first, although not quite the same twist to the story - still equally enjoyable for any Abercrombie fan.

These books are aimed at the YA market - I think probably great for teenagers, but not so much for my advanced reader 10 year old.....just a little too much grit, raw emotion and base human nature on display for the tender hearted. (I'll keep her on the Brandon Sanderson young adult series a while longer, I think!).

Narration is good. Not exceptional, but absolutely fine and doesn't detract from the story in anyway.

another instalment of grit

An amusing story - but not with the grit of Abercrombie's best. A pleasant read with some interesting characters and story lines and no doubt I will read the next book when it is probably produced. Ben Elliot's narration is excellent.

Half way good

I enjoyed the first in the series of these books and was eager to listen to the second. I loved the way it switched to a different story but included elements of the first book. The relationship between Thorne & Brand in this book did make me chuckle as it came across as a 'coming of age' story behind the main element of the book. Well worth a listen and looking forward to the third book in the series. If you like this series, then you must listen to the rest of Joe Abercrombie's books as they are all great!!

Loved this and the first and going onto the third!

Joe Abercrombie has done it again, created another fantastic world with well rounded characters. This book grabbed me from the first page and I sure hope Joe Abercrombie writes more in this series

Another brilliant book

Easily lived up to its predecessor and a pleasant deviation away from Abercrombie's world of The Bloody Nine. Although a jaunt there again would not be unwelcome either.

It has been a long time since I have listened to a book which has kept me up in to the early morning, so gripping is the plot.

The narration is unparalleled. Having listened to more than fifty fantasy novels over several years, I can say with conviction that the chapter 'Battle Joy' is the best narrated battle sequence of any I have listened to. A heroic effort.
