About this listen

Unearths the stories of the little-known but powerful elder women in European myth and folklore, inspiring listeners to radically reimagine the last decades of their lives as the most dynamic of all

Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

After menopause, women can expect to live another forty to fifty years, making this stage of life longer than childbearing years. As Blackie describes it, midlife is the threshold to decades of opportunity and profound transformation, a time to learn, flourish, and claim the desires and identities that are often limited during earlier life stages. This is a time for gaining new perspectives, challenging and evolving our belief systems, exploring our calling, uncovering meaning, and ultimately finding healing for our accumulated wounds.

Sharon cuts through current western societal stereotypes, expectations & unhealthy beliefs about what it is to be a woman in the later stages of life & she offers a (beautifully written & narrated) deeper understanding of the wisdom & richness of elderhood.

There is a compelling, almost romance, to her descriptions of elderhood, that for me, (even now, as an almost 40 year old) inspire me to embrace the process of ageing and look forward positively, with genuine anticipation for the years to come. An important antidote to the countless age-resisting consumables & attitudes being marketed to women today.

I refer to ‘romance’, but by no means is this a sugarcoated enamel, we’re so used to seeing in mainstream culture today.

Sharon looks directly into the mulchy darkness and reminds us of its necessity for there to also be life and light. She invites us to embrace this and recognise the transformations and evolutions that can only emerge from that place. The new fire that burns within as we return.

She helps with our understanding of the inevitability of going deep into the woods , journeying into the underworld. That this is necessary to provide the fertility for each new cycle of being.

That within each end, is inherently a new beginning, and within each new beginning, is an inevitable ending. That truly living, is only possible when we give up the endless pursuit for external gratification, comfort & stasis.

Sharon points us inwards, to understand and love our real selves (the one beneath the layers) in every stage of life. She helps us to get in touch with the Creatrix and the guide within each of us, and to recognise her in all her forms. To allow her to burn bright.

She invites us to reach deep into ourselves, beyond the egoic state and see that we are all connected. She inspires us to listen for that calling, which brings true meaning & purpose to our lives, to recognise our gifts - and where to direct our energy in servitude to others and the planet.

A powerful and essential read. Thank you so much Sharon.

Wonderfully supportive of initiation into elderhood

Sharon Blackie reads beautifully. I found her voice mesmerising and calming. The book also set me off on a fury of research of all these wise and wonderful hags that pepper our landscapes and minds which in turn cost me a small fortune in other books to be read! Whilst reading this book my mother died and it helped my own transformation of acceptance of her death and my own steps into hagitude.

Very enjoyable and educational

Beautiful storytelling and a great book, however I would urge anyone considering HRT to do their research and look at information from medical sources such as Dr Louise Newson as I did find SB's views on it to be outdated and certainly not based in fact.

Great book

Sharon reaches out like the Hen Mother I so desperately need as I have no obvious woman to teach me how to enter the later phases. Sharon's wisdom and grounding with nature resound as she weaves the folk stories that demonstrate that aging is a privilege bringing it's own gifts as our fore mothers knew and welcomed. not a science laden time but wisdom and comfort. Thank you Sharon. you have given me courage to embrace the next chapter and value my continuing contribution. xxx
