The New York Times bestseller—part of the expanded universe based on the award-winning video game series Halo!

2524. Harvest is a peaceful, prosperous farming colony on the very edge of human-controlled space. But humanity has unknowingly trespassed on holy ground—straying into the path of the aggressive, theocratic empire known as the Covenant. What begins as a chance encounter between an alien privateer and a human freighter soon catapults all of mankind into a struggle for its very existence.

But humanity is also currently locked in a bitter civil war of its own: the Insurrection. With resources strained to the breaking point, the ultimate survival of Harvest’s citizens falls to a squad of battle-weary UNSC Marines and their inexperienced colonial militia trainees. In this unlikely group of heroes, one will stand above the rest—a young Marine staff sergeant named Avery Johnson....

Can’t believe I’ve taken so long to listen to this. What a fantastic story written before the Events of “Halo” following Sgt Johnson and the first contact of “The Covenant”

Sgt Johnson back story

In my opinion, this is not only the best Halo audio book, but the best of all the Halo books.
Holter Graham does an excellent job of reading the story, giving each character their own distinct, believable voice, unlike some other narrators (cough cough Scott Brick cough cough). They even got Jen Taylor AKA Cortana to voice one of the characters!
As for the story itself, it begins almost like a crime-noir novel, with everyone's favourite marine Avery Johnson caught in a moral struggle in his career in the UNSC. As the story progresses, he visibly develops as a character and overcomes his doubts of himself in order to become a better soldier and a better person. The other characters are likeable, including the Covenant characters, who provide a fascinating insight into motivations of their Great Journey.
Overall, this is a must read/listen for any Halo fan.

The best of all the Halo books

First off I'd like to say the backstory of Sgt Johnson was very well written. The training of recruits to the attack of Harvest all felt very emotional, I loved how half of the story followed Dadab (A Deacon - Unggoy) and his relationship with Lighter than Some (Huragok) throughout their journey, just goes to show not all the Covenant were bad, as we know, most were told to join or face the wrath of the Covenant's might.

Great to see Tartarus when he was young, had my Halo 2 gameplay in my head when he appeared.
All in all this was a great book, not as good as Ghosts of Onyx, but a great story. Good see to Jen take the reins, playing the AI...
A must for a Halo fan.
