About this listen

The collection of Kipling poetry, performed by Mark Redfield, with music by Jennifer Rouse, are taken mostly from “Barrack-Room Ballads”. The poems mostly dramatize the concerns, yearnings, emotions, and thoughts of British soldiers at war, stationed in India, or at home - now forgotten by their fellow countrymen. Popular favorites in this recording eloquently and powerfully read by Mark Redfield include “Gunga Din”, “The Last of the Light Brigade”, and “If”.

I endured three of these narrations before I asked for a refund. The sound effects and 'music' are unnecessary and detract from the poetry of Kipling's powerful writing. Narrators such as Tim Piggot-Smith or Paul Shelley capture the nuances and accents of Kipling with the right timbre and cadence, this narration has none of that. A real disappointment for which I am grateful to Audible so quickly refunding me a poor purchase. Don't be fooled by the book cover - avoid.
