"Guerra e pace" è indubbiamente il capolavoro di Tolstoj, che vi lavorò ininterrottamente, animato da un entusiasmo creativo che non ammetteva soste né riposo, dal 1863 al 1869, cioè negli anni della sua piena maturità. È un'opera unica nel suo genere, come la "Divina Commedia" o il "Faust", e quindi indefinibile, ma certo non un romanzo nel significato comunemente inteso. "Guerra e pace" ci appare come una storia infinita, una matassa di filo che si svolge con un ritmo ora lento, ora veloce e incalzante, seguendo la gioia di raccontare del narratore, perennemente affascinato dallo spettacolo della vita.

L'audiolibro narra gli avvenimenti russi tra il 1805, l'anno della prima sfortunata campagna contro Napoleone, e il 1812, l'anno dell'insorgenza popolare contro l'armata francese. Nel narrare il periodo napoleonico, Tolstoj dà forma alle vicende di due famiglie dell'alta nobiltà, i Bolkonskij e i Rostov, ispirate da valori onesti e genuini, in contrapposizione al corrotto clan dei Kuragin, e in questo scenario delinea alcuni meravigliosi ritratti dei protagonisti, tra cui quello di Nataša Rostova.

Un romanzo-poema di straordinaria complessità ma di folgorante bellezza, in cui i motivi storico-filosofici e psicologici si intrecciano in unità con armoniosa maestria. L'opera continua a essere fonte di ispirazione per numerose traduzioni cinematografiche e televisive.
