Summary
The first of the classic mysteries featuring governess-turned-detective Miss Silver, who investigates a deadly conspiratorial ring.
Charles Moray has come home to England to collect his inheritance. After four years wandering the jungles of India and South America, the hardy young man returns to the manor of his birth, where generations of Morays have lived and died. Strangely, he finds the house unlocked, and sees a light on in one of its abandoned rooms. Eavesdropping, he learns of a conspiracy to commit a fearsome crime.
Never one for the heroic, Charles’s first instinct is to let the police settle it. But then he hears her voice. Margaret, his long lost love, is part of the gang. To unravel their diabolical plot, he contacts Miss Silver, a onetime governess who applies her reason to solve crimes and face the dangers of London’s underworld.

Enjoyable visit to the past
The story revolves around people of a certain class at a certain time. If you like 1920s style and History the book will be fine. Other reviewers complain about the dialogue of one of the characters but I find the same irritation with Jane Austen dialogue. The book is of its time, if you don't enjoy the period, don't read it. I'm going to look for some more.

Plot lacking polish
Well enough read, but don't let this one put you off later Miss Silver books - the plotting is very loose. I found out afterwards that this book pre-dated all other Miss Silver titles by many years. Some fun, but a bit preposterous at times!

Dated but enjoyable
My first Patricia Wentworth story and not a delight as it was so dated in its narrative but maybe that's part of its charm. I shall try another I think

Persevere
Slow start but plot develops well and strands are ingeniously brought together. Do try it.

Very pleasantly surprised
This was my first go at reading Miss Silver book and, to be perfectly honest, I did not have high hopes for what I had assumed would be a Miss Marple knock-off, but this was brilliant. I loved the characters, the humour, and the story. I’ll be reading them all!

Ripping yarn. Great fun.
A 1920s detective novel in the best style of the genre. Simply too thrilling for words.

Not one of my favourite Miss Silver books
This was my fourth Miss Silver, and my least favourite so far. Still work a listen and Diana Bishop is a wonderful narrator. I found this dragged in places and some of the repetitive phrases used by one of the characters was ‘frightfully’ annoying. A meandering and tortuous tale at times, a reasonably predictable outcome.
If this is your first Miss Silver, do persevere, they get a lot better!

Old fashioned but still good mystery
Would you consider the audio edition of Grey Mask to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the printed version so can't say.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Grey Mask?
None in particular, although the ending was good.
What about Diana Bishop’s performance did you like?
I thought she was perfect as the narrator. Her style and delivery is very good and evocative of the period.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No, I enjoyed the whole thing.
Any additional comments?
This is the first Patricia Wentworth I have listened to and I will be listening to more especially if Diana Bishop is the narrator. They are stories for fans of old fashioned detective stories. Absolutely first rate.

Rather more penetrating than I had expected.
Daft plot, but interesting characters portrayed with more insight than many books of this genre. I will read more Patricia Wentworth.
