Summary

Rebels build a secret base on Green World. Their plan is to attack Earth and retake all the planets the humans have conquered.

Hegemony starships gather to strike the Rebels first, but where is their base? As the fleets search, Earth warships trespass into Skay space, igniting a fresh border conflict between rival Galactics.

When James McGill stumbles onto the rebel camp, they’re forced to step up their plans. The world goes up in flames. Friends are permed and cities are destroyed as everything spins out of control.

Can Earth survive? Find out in Green World, book 15 of the Undying Mercenaries series. With more than three million copies sold, USA Today best-selling author B. V. Larson is the king of modern military science fiction.

A Bit More Variety Here

I always look forward to a new release in this series and I wasn't disappointed with Green World. I was a bit down on Larson's last effort, stating that I felt it had become too formulaic. I'm pleased to say that I felt Green World had the usual elements you expect of an Undying Mercenaries story, but didn't quite follow the same modus operandi.

Also nice to have the series continued to be narrated by the excellent Mark boyett. There's nothing worse than an established series of books where there is a narrator change. Boyett has reprised all the usual voices here, so you'll feel right at home. It shows the man's professionalism that he is able to come back to these stories, likely after some time and having narrated several non related books in the interim and apply the correct voice to the various characters.

One of Larson's strengths as a writer is his ability to come up with imaginative new aliens and his stories are easy to understand, accessible for non science fiction fans and have colourful characters that, happily, are not neutered by woke politics etc.

I can't finish up a review without my usual nit picks. In one case, Larson has seemingly forgotten timelines, the

Story began in March and McGill returns in May, yet McGill exclaims he's been gone two weeks. Shouldn't that be two months?

Later, a Primus asks McGill to make an appointment for March.

I also spotted what I thought was a word close to what I believe it ought to have been. Early on in the book, our hapless hero is inspecting a large cargo ship. After some time, he decides to give up, stating that it was helpless. Should that have been hopeless?

Oh, and the character, Keevie (Uncertain how that's spelt) is referred to in one scene as a Bio, when, in fact, she's a Tech.

Again, very minor points indeed, but I do wonder what has happened to proof reading these days. Anyway, just me being a nit pick, that's all.

I enjoyed Green World, a somewhat different take on the usual fare in the series, which made it a better story than some of the more recent books.

Like the good old days

Nothing extremely novel or exciting but a bit of a return to the good old days, the old gang and all. Listening to James abusing hapless hogs made me laugh out loud like a lunatic in public a couple of times. Mark and his narration are fantastic as usual. Not the best but solid one.

You get exactly what you should expect

A standard "Undying Mercenaries" installment which would be exactly as you expect.

There is a previous review which describes the book as unimaginative and lacking innovation. I can only think that they must have skipped books 2-14 if they were expecting either.
