Story
Can Jane Tennison uncover a serial killer? The fourth in the Sunday Times best-selling Jane Tennison thrillers, Murder Mile is set in 1979 at the height of the 'Winter of Discontent' when economic chaos has led to widespread strikes across Britain. Jane Tennison, now a Detective Sergeant, has been posted to Peckham CID, one of London's toughest areas. As the rubbish on the streets begins to pile up, so does the murder count: two bodies in as many days. There are no suspects, and the manner of death is different in each case.

Young Anna Travis has been assigned to her first murder case - a series of killings that has shocked even the most hardened of detectives. They started eight years ago – now the body count is up to six. The method of killing is identical, the backgrounds of the girls identical - all drug-users and prostitutes. Then a seventh body is found. The modus operandi is the same - but the victim is a young student with the 'face of an angel'. The profile of the murderer has changed dramatically.

A motorway service station on the M1: dimly lit, run down, poorly supervised, flickering lights, dark corners; a favourite stopover for long-distance lorry drivers on their way up north from London. Behind it, a body is found in a ditch, that of a girl barely out of her teens. She appears to have no family, no friends, no connections anywhere. Other girls have gone missing in the vicinity and no one has stepped forward to claim them.

Good ( if a little too gory) book but terrible narration
- By S. Christie on 09-08-16
Summary
From the creator of the award-winning ITV series Prime Suspect, this is Jane Tennison's story, from rookie police officer to fully fledged detective.
Every legend has a beginning....
During 1974 and 1975, the IRA subjected London to a terrifying bombing campaign. In one day alone, they planted seven bombs at locations across central London. Some were defused - some were not.
Jane Tennison is now a fully fledged detective. On the way to court one morning, Jane passes through Covent Garden Underground station and is caught up in a bomb blast that leaves several people dead and many horribly injured. Jane is a key witness but is adamant that she can't identify the bomber. When a photograph appears in the newspapers showing Jane assisting the injured at the scene, it puts her and her family at risk from IRA retaliation.
Good Friday is the eagerly awaited date of the annual formal CID dinner, due to take place at St Ermin's Hotel. Hundreds of detectives and their wives will be there. It's the perfect target. As Jane arrives for the evening, she realises that she recognises the parking attendant as the bomber from Covent Garden. Can she convince her senior officers in time, or will another bomb destroy London's entire detective force?

Oh No!
Where is Julie Teal... her perfect narration of Hidden Killers was part of the reason for my purchasing Good Friday, and instead of her strong, resonant and entirely believable performance I'm listening to an annoying, slightly too high pitched narrator who gabbles across words, has no gravitas and like Jilly Bond has a feintly condescending 'jolly hockey sticks' intonation. A narrator suited to chick lit.
I'll give Good Friday to chapter 3 in deference to La Plante's great writing and the Tennison character before deciding whether to return it but definitely won't purchase anymore if Ms. Jessica Ball is narrating...spoiled it :-(

Disappointing ... narrator spoiled the story
Loved the first two Tennison books but the narrator for this one is dreadful - the book was hard to listen to and the characters reduced to shallow uninteresting people I couldn’t bear listening to. I gave up before finishing the story the narration was so annoying.

Cliche upon cliche.
What would have made Good Friday better?
Fewer unnecessary descriptions. They just dragged on and on and on.
What could Lynda La Plante have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Fewer cliches. More dynamic. For once I am surprised that I prefer the tv series to the book. It is usually the other way for me. I shan't hear/read any more books by Lynda La Plante.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jessica Ball’s performances?
Rather not.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Boredom.
Any additional comments?
Far too many cliches. Tennison's parents for one thing, also in her relations with men.Too many descriptions about food, clothes. I'm surprised that Jessica Ball did not know how to pronounce HARWICH.

Another great addition to the series
Tennison really sets herself apart again as an intelligent, talented detective surrounded by mostly male colleagues who don't always rate her opinion. The twists and turns with a central IRA plot take you by surprise, and just when you think you know what's coming, something unexpected occurs. A very enjoyable listen, yet again.

Far too much unnecessary detailed description
A good story spoilt by so much description of things! Really unnecessary. The readers voice didn’t sound right after listening to the first two books, found it hard to get in to. I liked the story line of Tennison just hope the next book isn’t so detailed!

Another exceptional Lynda La Plants book
I am a huge Lynda La Plante fan, and once again she does not disappoint. I initially hesitated to read this book because the IRA bombings are long in the past and I was worried the story would not be relevant. Because of her focus on character development and real human emotions, I feel this story is timeless and as relevant today as at was in 1974.

Very confusing chronology..
I've been attempting to listen to the Jane Tennison/Prime Suspect books in a chronological manner but it's very confusing:
EXAMPLE - "Series: Prime Suspect, Book 2, Jane Tennison, Book 7"
So - which is it? Should we follow the links to the Prime Suspect listings or the ones for Jane Tennison? The 1st title I 'read' had her as a DCI, then in the 2nd she was still a DC. It's not as enjoyable listening to them this way....

Predictable
No suspense in this at all. It’s easy to predict the ending after a few chapters. Not really a mystery at all.
