Story
Inspired by real events, Shadow of a Doubt is a thriller about a woman accused of causing her brother's death as a child in 1994 - only to blame it on a paranormal entity she swore was haunting their house at the time. No one believed her, and after two years of treatment in a psychiatric unit for delusional disorder, Cara was shunned by her remaining family and put into foster care. Now at 34, she's returning to the empty family home for the first time since her brother's death, and she's about to re-discover the evil that was lurking inside its walls.

Story
The white-washed Italian villa is perfect. I thought it might feel odd, living in a stranger’s house for the summer, but as my husband and children swim in the infinity pool, I start to relax. And then, in the back of a wardrobe, I find something that shatters everything.... Sparkling green eyes, square jaw, lopsided smile. A young man with his arm around a beautiful woman. The picture is old and faded, but I’d recognize him anywhere. The man is my husband.

Story
She bursts into my life like a storm, and nothing is the same again. One by one, I watch as my friends fall under her spell. Only I see that her smiles don’t reach her cold, furious eyes. And when I’m accused of things I didn’t do, when my home is vandalized, I know she’s behind it. But she only lets her mask slip when no one is looking, so if I say anything, I’ll look crazy. So when the baby shower comes around, I’m sitting on a velvet sofa in a posh hotel room, surrounded by balloons. But that afternoon, I finally learn the unbelievable truth. There is no baby....

Story
Women are rarely cold-blooded killers. But when famous philanthropist Hugo Fletcher is found dead, there is no doubt in anybody's mind that the killer is a woman. And it is clear from the precision of the planning that this was no crime of passion. It was an execution. The victim was revered the world over for his charitable work with trafficked Eastern European prostitutes, and as at least one of these girls is missing, Detective Chief Inspector Tom Douglas is certain that there has to be a connection.

Fran finds her standing by the swings. A little girl, Esther, no older than seven years old, by herself in the dead of night, her pretty but old-fashioned yellow dress covered in grass stains and her hair dishevelled. She says she's waiting for Father, and that strikes Fran as particularly odd. After Esther is reunited with her family, Fran can't stop thinking about this pious child whose imaginary friend is God. Fran's instincts tell her something is very wrong. Why does Esther keep running away from home, and how did she get that bruise on her leg?

Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him. Ten years ago my darling son Jesse was murdered and our perfect family was destroyed. My strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo I carried with me everywhere. But today I’m finally close to finding happiness again. My ash-blonde hair has been curled into ringlets. Carefully placed white flowers frame my delicate features. The small, drab chapel has been prettied up with white satin, and there are tiny red hearts scattered on the small table where I will soon sign the register with my new husband.

Summary
Gone Astray is a tense psychological thriller from debut novelist Michelle Davies.
When Lesley Kinnock buys a lottery ticket on a whim, it changes her life more than she could have imagined....
Lesley and her husband, Mack, are the sudden winners of a £15 million EuroMillions jackpot. They move with their 15-year-old daughter, Rosie, to an exclusive gated estate in Buckinghamshire, leaving behind their ordinary lives - and friends - as they are catapulted into wealth beyond their wildest dreams.
But it soon turns into their darkest nightmare when, one beautiful spring afternoon, Lesley returns to their house to find it empty: their daughter, Rosie, is gone.
DC Maggie Neville is assigned to be Family Liaison Officer to Lesley and Mack, supporting them while quietly trying to investigate the family. And she has a crisis threatening her own life - a secret from the past that could shatter everything she's worked so hard to build.
As Lesley and Maggie desperately try to find Rosie, their fates hurtle together on a collision course that threatens to end in tragedy....

A lot of crying
This audio book did not really work for me. Had to constantly remind myself that a young girl was missing to help suppress a lot of irritation caused by the dialogue. All the characters seemed unlikeable but not in an entertaining way. As mentioned in the title plenty crying by just about everybody. What an awful sister Maggie has! I had hoped for some likable traits to emerge but no.

Really a waste of my time!
Narration was fine with the characters nicely presented BUT the quality of writing is very, very low. The end was totally ridiculous and even the narration could not paper over the lack of good storytelling.

Good story, a few glitches
Enjoyable story with likeable characters.
Good plot and quite pacy.
I did enjoy it, but there were a few points that I wish the editor had fixed.
I chose this book because I mistakenly thought it was the first in the series. I realised that it wasn't, which didn't matter, except that the author tells you exactly what happened and 'who did it' in the first book, for no reason. What a spoiler!
Part of the plot was left unresolved at the end.
I think the author must be sponsored by Blackberry because she keeps specifically referring to them including a particular model at on point! It's a bit off putting.
