Bullrande, leende, jovialisk och samtidigt iskallt brutal - Hermann Göring personifierade på vissa sätt kontrasten mellan nazismens välordnade yta och dess vansinnesvåldsamma inre. Han började sin karriär som dekorerad flygarhjälte i första världskriget, blev medlem av nationalsocialisterna, styrde en tid över SA och lade sedan grunden till judeförintelsen och terrorregimens maktpolitik, där han själv stod som mäktigast efter Hitler. Men narkotikamissbruket och rädslan att förlora sin rikedom, sin konst och sitt slott gjorde att Görings ställning försvagades. Ändå stod han fast vid sina gärningar, utan visad ånger, under Nürnbergrättegångarna, och valde sin egen väg ut.
