Story
Eric's (1902-1945) refusal earlier that week to run on Sunday in the Olympic 100-meter race had stunned the world. Now his incredible victory in the 400-meter race further strengthened his believe in God's promise, "He who honors Me, I will honor." Years later, Eric Liddell would be tested far beyond mere physical ability as a missionary to China. His character, perseverance, and endurance are a challenging example for all who would obey the call to bring the gospel to the nations.

Story
Many looked on Gladys Aylward's expedition to mainland China as foolhardy and dangerous. It was. On her own, as a single female, she carried her passport and other documents, along with the only money and belongings that she had, in a small briefcase with a teapot and a saucepan tied to the handle. After having purchased her one-way ticket to China, she left the UK with a single-minded determination to do what God had commanded her. She knew she was meant to go to China - even if no mission was prepared to support her.

Good book for youth
I probably would have enjoyed this book more had I not read God's Smuggler immediately prior. I was expecting to hear the same kind of incredible testimony. This book is very good, yes!! I guess what I missed was hearing more about the prayers and seeing so clearly how God answered them. My review will only make sense if you read God's Smuggler... God clearly used Gladys! The book covers what happened but, due to the fact that the Gladys was not involved in the writing, I believe the behind-the-scenes deep relationship with Christ doesn't come through. Her life testimony is incredible! I just wish I could have known more about her prayer life. I hope this makes sense! Good book and thankful for the author for gathering as much information as possible. ... But definitely read God's Smuggler!

Never say anything like, just a maid!
I thought I knew a lot about missionary history, but after reading this and other Christian Heroes: Then and Now books; I feel that I know nothing. Gladys was a maid, not a theologian, Doctor or nurse.....a maid. But God doesn't care who you are and what you are doing currently. I can do all things through Christ which Strengthens me. And wow, did Gladys do so many things through Christ. Just when I think that the Benges' can't come up with another hero of God that I've never heard of....boom, they write about someone else that is so impressive. I can't believe I have never heard of Gladys Aylward, what a hero and saint of God.
