About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Girl One by Sara Flannery Murphy, read by Jesse Vilinsky.

Orphan Black meets Margaret Atwood by way of Naomi Alderman in this brilliantly twisty high concept thriller

Josephine Morrow is Girl One. The first of nine ‘Miracle Babies’ conceived entirely without male aid or intervention, and raised on an experimental commune known as the Homestead.

After a suspicious fire at the ranch kills both the doctor behind the pioneering experiment and one of the youngest of the girls, the mothers and their children are scattered across the country, some embracing the media spotlight, others – like Josephine’s mother – refusing to talk about it.

Now years later, Josie is studying medicine, following in the footsteps of her beloved mentor, when she is called home to discover that her mother has vanished, her house left wrecked. Josie sets off on a desperate road trip, attempting to track down her estranged sisters, who seem to hold the keys to her mother’s disappearance. But she soon discovers that not all the girls have been able to build new lives for themselves and that someone out there is determined to stop her reaching the truth about exactly what happened at that ranch – and where her mother is now.

While the storyline and concept were interesting I struggled with the constant annoying descriptions of the main character’s world view that paused an otherwise gripping narrative. There were times when how Girl 1 felt were relevant, however having her innermost feelings and thoughts interrupting a fast paced series of events soon became an annoying feature of the book that I would have started to skim if reading in hard copy to get to the point and keep the momentum of the story.

Interesting but overdone

I highly recommend. Great story line not predictable with a real concentration on character development.

Great book

The author appears to have less than a secondary school knowledge of genetics which gets the book of to a bad start.

The prose on its own is quite beautiful, but the plot a point of each chapter did nothing to engage me.

The premise of chasing an unknown threat just doesn’t ring true.

Plotless and rambling
