lift the lapis lazuli tablet and read
of Gilgamesh - his adventures and all he endured.
King above kings, most formidable presence.
Gilgamesh originated in Ancient Mesopotamia nearly 4,000 years ago, yet its themes of power, loyalty, love and loss resound with contemporary relevance. The eponymous demigod tyrannically rules the kingdom of Uruk. To establish peace, the gods create his counterpart, the wild man Enkidu, and the two embark on a series of extraordinary adventures. But after tragedy strikes, Gilgamesh sets out alone on a desperate quest for immortality leading him to the very edge of the world . . .
Simon Armitage's fresh and propulsive version brings Gilgamesh alive as a poem. He harnesses the rhythm of its orchestrated language and conjures a sense of poetic wholeness while honouring its inherent fragmentation. Enhanced by illuminating commentary, this accomplished translation transports us right back to the origins of civilisation and storytelling.
Due to appearing on the Armitage menu
And only because of that digestible presentation
I have ingested an otherwise neglected serving of some old and crumbling crust
Reworked and softened by the addition of Armitages warm northern vocal gravy.
I find the reworking and presentation of these ancient pieces (which he somehow finds the time for) repeatedly nourishing.
Both by offering another angled window through which to consider the nuance of his particular perspective on language which is a fine ingredient in the casserole of Audible
His language sloshes about in my head
Making what ever calibrations and adjustments it affords before it drains away and dries there somewhere
sedimentary and forgotten
Until after months or years it floods in again when I click on it
I won’t say like Bisto.
Earl grey.
I know, sacrilege.
But also -
I lost the thread -
By unearthing some ancient pathway I would obviously never have trodden. I mean, no - there is no chance I would be here were it not for the point of departure.
These lost pathways
He’s like a gentle silent leaf blower turning over the dusty pages to reveal some worn northern cobbles
Mesopotamian ones in this case.
And sailing me along them in his gravy boat.
Barrow perhaps.
Stretcher.
I won’t claim to even have a rudimentary understanding of the full picnic of poetry as even an elementary student should but i can claim to have obtained great personal value from listening to all the material Simon Armitage has provided through Audible.
As I listen whist I carve stone for a living these sounds I can attest somehow smooth the edges off my own time and leave me mellowed and enriched in my own practice
although I don’t claim to have a deeper meaning or understanding as to why.
It’s like
Dinner is nice
But it’s sometimes just better with gravy.
Yes
I am glad I purchased it.
Another good one to join the many in the vault
and another that I am sure will improve in both clarity and comfort with a little worn familiarity.
Cheers again then Simon
Much appreciated
Sound
Comfortable clarity crumbles from the clay
