About this listen

Marissa Meyer, number one New York Times best-selling author, returns to the fairytale world with this retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.

Long ago cursed by the god of lies, a poor miller’s daughter has developed a talent for spinning stories that are fantastical and spellbinding and entirely untrue.

Or so everyone believes.

When one of Serilda’s outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her...for a price. Love isn’t meant to be part of the bargain.

Soon Serilda realises that there is more than one secret hidden in the castle walls, including an ancient curse that must be broken if she hopes to end the tyranny of the king and his wild hunt forever.

I loved this book, as I have with every other of Marissa's books, but would of loved a heads up that its only half a book. I don't mind, but it wasn’t mentioned anywhere in blurb. I didn’t think the book was bought to a good ending point. It felt slow in the last third of the book and then rushed in the last few chapters, where I then was left thinking, what?
I wait in anticipation for the sequel!

The story is bloody amazing! I had refused to even acknowledge this was a retelling for Rumpelstiltskin! I didn't even google it! I knew that it was familiar and knew it was that but refused until that part that was old but well-known but cannot spoil for just the people to have the chance to listen to it.

This was done so well keeping the main parts from the original while mixing in German Folklore creatures. It was really good the writing was amazing and the whole pace was amazing as well!

The narrator did a good job with giving us a sound performance but in some areas it sounded robotic or mechanical like it was edited in that would break the immersion. However the pronunciations of the creatures was good though I cannot confirm it 100% as I am not German but I have learned some words in the past that sounded familiar.

I love the story and like the Narrator

The author has such a vivid way of creating the magical universe that it's a real joy to listen to it!

excellent, imaginative storytelling

I enjoyed this book almost as much as the Lunar Chronicles. The story took lovely unexpected turns and I couldn't stop listening. The only criticism I have is that it darker and more violent than the other books I've read. I also didn't read reviews beforehand, which would have warned me that the book ends abruptly. Can't wait for the next one.

Dark but so entertaining
