Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The first novel from the award-winning, bestselling author of Everything I Know About Love
Narrated by Holliday Grainger, star of Lady Chatterley's Lover, Tell it to the Bees and Animals.
Nina Dean has arrived at her early thirties as a successful food writer with loving friends and family, plus a new home and neighbourhood. When she meets Max, a beguiling romantic hero who tells her on date one that he's going to marry her, it feels like all is going to plan.
A new relationship couldn't have come at a better time - her thirties have not been the liberating, uncomplicated experience she was sold. Everywhere she turns, she is reminded of time passing and opportunities dwindling. Friendships are fading, ex-boyfriends are moving on and, worse, everyone's moving to the suburbs. There's no solace to be found in her family, with a mum who's caught in a baffling mid-life makeover and a beloved dad who is vanishing in slow-motion into dementia.
Dolly Alderton's debut novel is funny and tender, filled with whip-smart observations about relationships, family, memory, and how we live now.
Critic reviews
"I love this book. It is wise, funny, tender and true, sharply-observed and utterly hilarious. Dolly Alderton's talent is phenomenal." (Elizabeth Day)
"I loved it - Dolly Alderton has clearly mastered every form of writing. Which is a surprise to nobody." (Candice Carty-Williams)
"Loved it from start to finish, really laugh out loud: well-written, packed with ideas and observations and so engaging I can't put it down." (Philippa Perry)

LOVED THIS
Dolly Alderton has SUCH A GOOD insight into the human psyche. The book feels relevant, heartfelt and human. I didn't want it to end! Loved the performance of the audiobook too.

Thought provoking
Alderton explores relationships and what it means to be a thirty something woman constantly reminded/ thinking about the future and the conflict of “looking for love”. It handles relationships with family and friends realistically and confidently with some of the most genuine dialogue I have ever read.
You get the sense Alderton is a master of both listening and analysing relationship dynamics from the honest and relatable themes of the book.
My only criticism having read her previous book would be that I can directly see and hear her voice within the story. Though it isn’t a crime to write about what you know and put a little of yourself in the character, I did think it was a little too obvious.

Holliday narration made it feel “square”. Ok-ish
Dolly has a lovely writing style but the story line lacked oomph. I think I would have enjoyed it more as a read rather than audible.

Moving, funny, poignant
I loved this and found it really moving. It filled me with sympathetic anger for heterosexual women who are dating in their 30s and the challenges they face compared to their male counterparts. Not all books make you feel something real, and it’s so gratifying when they do. Also great that the author addressed the issue of dementia in a parent very directly, as it is something that many people experience but is spoken about comparatively little. I liked the narrator a lot, only giving 4 stars because sometimes it was hard to differentiate between characters based on her vocalisation of them.

Great read! Perfect for this latest lockdown.
Loved this book as much as Dolly’s first book. Motivated me to do my morning run so I could get to the next chapter. 5 stars!

Story ok - poor performance
Not a huge fan. Found the main protagonist a bit depressing and whingey. I really didn’t like the narration on the different characters. Story fine but nothing really happened.
