Horror maestro Christopher Lee reads this quartet of supernatural tales, adapted from the stories of M. R. James.
More than a century ago, M. R. James was the provost of King's College, Cambridge. He would gather together a select group of students in his rooms every Christmas Eve and give a candlelit performance of one of his superbly unsettling ghost stories. Christopher Lee recreates the spine-chilling atmosphere of those evenings, as he dons James' mantle to read these four fearful tales.
'The Stalls of Barchester': perusing the papers of Archdeacon Haynes, our narrator uncovers a hidden history of intrigue, murder, a sinister cat and some strange ecclesiastical carvings.
'The Ash Tree': when Sir Matthew Fell, squire of Castringham Hall, testifies against suspected witch Mrs Mothersole, she is found guilty and hanged. From that day forward, a series of tragic events afflict the Fell family, all seemingly linked to the old ash tree growing in the Hall grounds....
'Number 13': staying in Room 12 of the Golden Lion in the Danish town of Viborg, historian Mr Anderson is perturbed by the mystery of the room next door. Who, or what, is the inhabitant of number 13?
'A Warning to the Curious': the horrific account of an archaeologist named Paxton, who takes the fateful decision to excavate the last of the legendary East Anglian crowns - and unleashes a terrifying supernatural force....

I loved it! Beautifully read and enjoyable stories- wish it had been longer though. Really enjoyed the music before each story

Enjoyable
Christopher Lee’s narration is what elevates this to a really good listen. I can recommend this; Derek Jacobs’s narration of MR James, also on Audible, is also outstanding.

Sir Christopher Lee is magical.
some of M R James best stories in my opinion, underlined by the king of horror actors. This isn't actually an audio book. it's the soundtrack to the BBC TV series. this doesn't make much difference because Christopher Lee narrated for an arm chair, holding court just like MR James did. however one slight drag is that the rather long tv intro wasn't edited out after episode 1.

A short but enjoyable group of stories.
As an avid fan of older more atmospheric ghost stories I really enjoyed this group of short stories. Whilst I can understand others struggling with Lee's style of reading, I personally found his performance to be enjoyable and the halts, pauses and inner inflections gave more the impression of someone recounting their own story as opposed to reading a book. Overall i'd say it's worth a listen to anyone who is a fan of old ghost stories.

I wish there was more
If anything, the only negative is that it's just four half-hour stories. Excellent narration by thw great Christopher Lee!

Absolutely loved it.
I have listened to this over and over again. Outstanding performance by Christopher Lee. It's absolutely brilliant. Try it. Go on. You know you want to. You'll not regret it.

Not as good as the tv version
Unfortunately, as much as loved the TV version this version was not great. Christopher Lee was painfully slow and keep stopping mid-sentence. Off

Disappointing
Christopher Lee has an amazing voice and I was hopeful but it just wasn't very good. I barely made it through the first story but couldn't through the second. No flow
