Outdated

I learned a little to be fair, and did stick with it to the end, but it REALLY needs updating to cover the 24/7 internet connected generation. The biggest criticism though... the narration was DREADFUL! Sounded like an 1950s information film. Snooty condescending tone made it hard for me to take ideas seriously.

A must for all parents of teenagers

This is a very clever and witty explanation of why teenagers act like they do ... and understanding that is a powerful aid to dealing with their issues and the difficulties inherent in relating to your nearest and dearest teens. It is full of moments where the authors put into words issues that the listener can relate to and give a logical explanation and insight. Much of it is common sense that gets lost in the fog of teenage angst, but they brilliantly put it into context and deflate the pressure. This should be compulsory listening for anyone with a teenager or a pre-teen.

Amusing but a bit thin in content and depth

Enjoyable quick book, certainly lightened the burden of raising teens these days but it's a bit light and airy. I wouldn't say if gave any real useful tools to apply in a practical manner

Good for Daughter /Morher

Reading the book through the stories as if conversations of parent Teenager was a good way to connect and relate to Teenager's own voice and they way they think, my only issue was the voices and conversations felt to me of a daughter and Mother which is useful if you are a Mum and have a daughter. Personally I have a son I didn't find a connection with them half as much. Girls and boys have different issues so If your a Dad with a son I would try to look for a book the concentrates more on Father / Son as you will likely get more out of it

You have to pick carefully what to take away from this book

I expected great things from this book, but was disappointed. Some good info about developmental stages and process that teenagers go through, but the rest I found to be patronising and judgemental.

Authors seems to have this idea that teenagers are difficult now, because physical punishment is not there any longer for children, which means that teenagers are just not afraid. There also seem to be an idea woven through that teenagers 40 years ago were golden... Boarding schools mentioned several times as great option to hand over difficult teenagers to be raised, albeit not affordable to everybody.

The last straw was section about suicide, where talking about girls and self-harming authors use word "indulge" in self harming behaviours. As a counsellor, I was horrified to read this.

There was no mention of neurodiversity, bullying and etc.

Audio performance didn't do any favours, rather irritating and patronising tone. Won't be recommending it to my friends.

Some chapters written about my child

I didn't think I'd enjoy this book. It was recommended by a friend when I told her about one of my daughters tantrums. The book is entertaining and informative. I have changed tack and I've noticed my daughters confusion when things haven't gone as she thought a confrontation would. Worth a listen, you've nothing to lose.

Great book for everyone

I found the book helpful, enjoyable, illuminating and hopeful.
I have passed it on to friends, colleagues and clients as many people struggle to understand what is happening in adolescence and worry about their role as parents.

Dated

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Disappointingly dated but if you know absolutely nothing about teens this might be of some use. Worst of all the narrator is extremely patronising in tone. Unfortunately she seems to think that she is narrating to thick, badly behaved young teenagers instead of parents. It's also difficult to tell whether she is speaking the role of a teenager or a pathetic whiney parent. Probably the most irritating narration I've heard to date.

Has Get Out of My Life... put you off other books in this genre?

Not unless they're read by this narrator.

What didn’t you like about Lucy Paterson’s performance?

See above.

Helpful, but attention, 'necessary' bad language.

I found it comforting as it seems I'm not as bad a job as a parent as I thought! recommended read. Relivent and encouraging.

A little dated.

Teenagers and how they behave and how we should care for them hasn't and never will fundamentally change so I found this book helpful and informative. I would especially recommend it to carers of pre adolescent as forewarned is forearmed, but carers of older teens may well find nuggets of wisdom.
