About this listen

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: The Intimate Diary of a Professional Lady is the story of Lorelei Lee, a beautiful blonde flapper in 1920s New York, told in first-person diary form.

Lorelei is a rising star in Hollywood when she meets Mr. Eisman, a man who compliments her intelligence and convinces her it is much more important to be educated than to be in the cinema. Plying her with books, he encourages Lorelei to write down her adventures in a diary despite her penchant for misspellings and incorrect pronunciation. Growing restless with Mr. Eisman and his simplistic routine of dinner, dancing, and returning Lorelei to her apartment, she longs to stretch her wings and experience more of the world. And being no stranger to the affections of men (as well as having a passion for wealth), Lorelei meets her fair share of characters in her travels to Europe with her friend Dorothy Shaw in tow.

The instant success of the novel brought about a play adaptation soon followed by a screenplay and silent film written by Anita Loos and her husband. The second feature film adaptation brought about the ever-popular hit featuring Marilyn Monroe as Lorelei.
