Summary

An Elegant Werewolf in Edinburgh....

1788. When Lindsay Somerville, the most elegant werewolf in Paris, learns that the man who held him in abject captivity for decades is on his way to France, intent on recapturing him, he knows he must leave the Continent for his own safety. Lindsay cannot take the risk of being recaptured—he may have been free for a century but he can still feel the ghost of his old chains under his fine clothes.

On a Mission....

While he’s in Edinburgh, Lindsay has been tasked with acquiring the “Naismith Papers”, the writings of a long-dead witchfinder. It should be a straightforward mission - all Lindsay has to do is charm an elderly book collector, Hector Cruikshank. But Cruikshank may not be all he seems, and there are others who want the papers.

Meets His Match

As if that were not enough, while tracking down the Naismith Papers, Lindsay meets stubborn architect Drew Nicol. Although the attraction between them is intense, Nicol seems frustratingly determined to resist Lindsay’s advances. Somehow though, Lindsay can’t seem to accept Nicol’s rejection. Is he just moonstruck, or is Nicol bonded to him in ways he doesn’t yet understand?

Note: This is the first book of a duology - the story continues and will complete in the second book, Master Wolf.

Amazing narration and plot!

no idea why it got such low scores! Joanna Chambers never disappoints with her heartstopping ability to capture the spirit of Edinburgh in her novels. Scotland is already magical, but sprinkle a bit of werewolf and romance and that is simply the icing on a fabulous cake! Hamish is a dream. If I could have his soft scottish drawl narrate literally everything in my life, I would die happy. Both the narration, worldbuilding, plot and ofcourse characters are spectacular! Ignore the scores and give this a listen!

⭐️ Fascinating 🌟 Fabulously Narrated

Lindsay's story opens with misery so palpable that when his circumstances finally brighten, I felt relief and got caught up in his hedonistic existence and marvelous fashion sense – this here is a werewolf with vanities and his character work is sublime! Happy with his life, Lindsay didnt realise what he was missing until Drew happened. This is a tortuous, atmospheric tale filled with lush details exploring Edinburgh’s energy. Yes, there are titillating, earthy, explicit scenes because, hello, this is a Ms. Chambers trademark?!? Yes, there is suspense that builds to an excruciating tension. Yes, the werewolf lore touches familiar beats but spins something fresh - I most adored the elegant, upper class take. As this is a duology, I expected the cliffhanger, but not how Ms. Chambers played it?! Loved it!

🎧 Hamish McKinlay’s performance was outstanding. His Scots accent and dialect work perfection. I wish I knew the dialect names because HM obviously went to great lengths to convey them. I can only offer that Lindsay got a haughty Anglicised Scots; Drew an absolutely glorious burr; while the rest of the Scottish characters had variations reflecting their station in life. Hamish also served up delicious treats with his French and English accents and villains got their own special brand of smarmy or menaces. Please let me stress how right Hamish got the tones and rhythms of conversation and seamlessly delivered the dialogue? I trusted all his choices except the pacing – I listened at 1.05 or 1.10 speed. I am awed by Mr. McKinlay powerful vocal acting and shall now force stop my gush instanta!
