 लसीकरणाचा शोध वैद्यकशास्त्राच्या इतिहासातला अत्यंत महत्त्वाचा शोध आहे. एडवर्ड जेन्नर या इंग्लिश वैद्यकतज्ज्ञाने लसीकरणाची पद्धत शोधली. अठराव्या शतकात, युरोपात दर वर्षी सुमारे चार लाख लोक देवीच्या (स्मॉलपॉक्स) घातक रोगाला बळी पडत असत. यावर प्रतिबंधक उपाय म्हणून जेन्नरने देवीवरची लस शोधून काढली. जेन्नरचा हा देवीच्या रोगावरील लसीचा शोध म्हणजेच लसीकरणाचा शोध आहे. जेन्नरच्या या शोधाचे बीज त्याने अनेकांकडून ऐकलेल्या एका माहितीत होते. त्या काळी दुधासाठी पाळलेल्या अनेक गाईंच्या आचळावर पुरळ उठून त्यांचे फोडात रूपांतर व्हायचे. या रोगाला गोस्तन देवी (काऊपॉक्स) हे नाव होते. या रोगामुळे गवळणींच्या हातावरही गोस्तन देवींची लागण व्हायची. मात्र अशा गोस्तन देवी येऊन गेलेल्या गवळणींना घातक देवीची मात्र कधीच लागण होत नसल्याचे, एडवर्ड जेन्नरच्या कानावर आले होते. या माहितीवरून जेन्नरने निष्कर्ष काढला, की गोस्तन देवी येऊन गेल्यानंतर माणसाच्या शरीरात देवींपासून संरक्षण देणारी व्यवस्था निर्माण होत असावी. इ.स. १७९६ मध्ये एडवर्ड जेन्नरने एका गोस्तन देवी आलेल्या गवळणीच्या हातावरील जखमांतील द्रव काढला आणि तो जेम्स फिप्स या आठ वर्षांच्या मुलाला टोचला. त्यानंतर या मुलाला ताप येऊन थोडे बरे वाटेनासे झाले. परंतु नऊ-दहा दिवसांत हा मुलगा पूर्ण बरा झाला. त्यानंतर जेन्नरने या मुलाला थेट देवीच्या रुग्णाला आलेल्या फोडांतील द्रव टोचला. त्या मुलाला आता काही देवी आल्या नाहीत. १७९७ साली जेन्नरने रॉयल सोसायटीकडे, आपल्या प्रयोगाचे वर्णन करणारे एक छोटे टिपण पाठवले. परंतु रॉयल सोसायटीला ते स्वीकारार्ह वाटले नाही. त्यानंतर आणखी काही चाचण्या करून त्यावर, १७९८ साली जेन्नरने एक छोटेसे पुस्तक प्रकाशित केले.©2020 Storyside IN (P)2020 Storyside IN Environmentalists & Naturalists Professionals & Academics
