Summary

Tuscany, 1358: Thomas Blackstone has built a formidable reputation in exile, fighting as a mercenary amid the ceaseless warring of Italy's City States. But when a dying man delivers a message recalling him to England, it seems to be a trap. Yet Blackstone cannot disobey and will brave the terrors of the High Alps in winter, face the Black Prince in tournament and submit to trial by combat. Every step of the way, he is shadowed by a notorious assassin with orders to dispatch him to hell....

A great book and amazing performance

I really recommend this for anyone with an interest in historical fiction. This novel takes a slightly darker tone which I enjoyed, and has some shocking twists and turns which leave you aching for more. The best book in the series so far, and I’m already looking forward to the next one!

Bernard who ?

I am a great fan of Bernard Cornwell's writing and characters but must say I think Uthred has more than met his match in Sir Thomas

More of the same...

If you liked the previous books, you'll like this one. Ultimately the voice artist seems to struggle with French names, mispronouncing silent L's in a way that could get thoroughly irksome.

I certainly wouldn't spend more than a credit on it.

Laboured and dull

Laboured and dull I definitely won't be continuing this series, a big shame as it had potential but sadly become a mundane story

Astonishing

Although the change of narrator at first was strange, after getting use to it I descoverd just how amazing an addition this was to the series. I was kept on edge throughout not knowing what was going to happen or who would do it, with the well placed subtle hints that were stunned about not only to foreshadow events, but to also throw is off the truth behind the story making each reveal just as shocking as the first. With the truly amazing twists of the story being woven throughout I became deeply attached to every main character, but still unsure of who was a actually a friend or who would die and this antisipation of events kept me coming back to the story to hear more.

A truly amazing book that I would recommend to anybody and would encourage them to start from the beginning of the series so that they can understand just how good the writing is.

Very enjoyable

Slow at times but very good overall, like the previous books in the series. Collin is a wonderful narrator perfect for capturing the moments.
