Was not expecting that

As LITRPG's go the themes that run through this story are definitely more mature. For the first 2/3 of the book I was taken in by both the excellent writing, and performance. It has a grittier feel than other novels of the same genre which I found appealing. The main character has both an interesting back story, which is well fleshed out, and a relatable outlook on life considering his experiences.

The last few chapters took an interesting turn... what the blurb should probably include is that there are VERY strong adult/erotic themes with fairly graphic descriptions of sexual acts including BDSM and a threesome.

Not sure...

Was enjoying the book, then it went into fantasy porn for over an hour before it got back on track. Going to give the second book a try and see how that goes.

Virtual reality mmorpg with a twist

If you can imagine crossing Jack reacher with d&d, and then adding a little carry on style erotica you wouldn't be far off this book. Easy listening with simple plot elements which don't cause a strain on the cranium but the back story develops nicely and left me wanting more.

Just a little boring

The biggest problem with this book is the main protagonist is just not every likable. He comes across as a bit of a douche bag. Outside his love interests the story never really moves along. No antagonist to speak of.

Very interesting story line

My only quibble would be that sometimes the narrator is narrating a conversation between characters with a almost sarcastic tone which builds suspense when not needed, makes for edge of your seat listening during ordinary scenes
That said I love his voice very small town sheriff vibe which suits perfectly

Great RPG-LIT story immersion.

I love RPG-LIT as I'm a gamer myself I find these stories awsome and closing my eyes can imagine with near perfection the visual storyline that would scroll across my minds eye giving me an imersive deapth to the story. I would just like to mention as a matter of course that there are sexually explicit scenes in the storyline that may be unsuitable for minors and therefore with parental responsibility be suggested for children, apart from that this is the new dimension in storytelling I find refreshing and adept in the 21st century.

Started awesome but no cigar!

Well what can I say without being to cruel. it started really really well. Good pretense for the immersion, nice class choice and supporting character's. I started to feel some good connections with them. BUT as soon as the author tried disastrously to inject what felt like an adolescent wandering into a sexual fantasy onto the page I felt sick. The narrator then turned into that uncle at a party who always hugged your 5 year old daughter a fraction to long whilst brushing his hand along a crease that didn't exist. All this whilst trying desperately to salvage what was left of the book. The ending was transparency personified, I had it pegged about 5 minutes after the first adolescent encounter and felt from what I knew about the main character he would just not have behaved in the manner he was portrayed. Maybe I was expecting to much...no, no I wasn't god damn it. I felt so let down and cringed listening to the last half of the book and was hoping beyond hope that the author would turn it around by maybe just maybe Alberit had eaten some strange mushrooms and it was all just a bad trip and the great story telling that started out would continue. Alas it didn't and left me with a bitter taste(can u tell?) in my mouth and itellectuallity.(yes that is a word) I honestly thought a female had written the book under a pseudonym, thinking "Oh this is what men think of in their darkest fantasies" seriously if this is what u get off on, get off my god damn planet now you degenerate freaks. ok rant over, it's that I was left so sad and disappointed I had to say something. I read a lot, ok that's putting it mildly. I read every single day and have done for over 25 years. well over 1000 books. from Plato to penguin and back again. I know my shite and the last half was. Sorry Daniel you can and should have done better. You got a 2 overall and 2 x 3 because Ithe first half was top notch!

Unimaginative, crass and poorly executed.

Iwas very disappointed with this book and have listened to several others in this genre. It is full of unnecessary pornographic scenes and lacks a strong story line.

one foot in LitRPG the other in erotica

“Gamer for Life” is the first book in the “Alpha World” series.  At the time of this review, both book one and book two are available in audio format.  Book three is scheduled for release near the end of 2017.  The series is written by Daniel Schinhofen and the Audible narration is performed by Peter Berkrot; who is a seasoned veteran in the audiobook narration arena.  The book is classified as a contemporary science fiction piece, and best categorized in the Literary Role-Playing Game (LitRPG) genre.  In a very crowded and growing category, this book attempts to stand out by adding a few unique elements that people either enjoy or greatly dislike.  The story feels polarizing, and by looking at other reviews, it becomes clear this is because of the author’s focus on a darker, seedier, and quite an adult world.  If you are at all offended by the use of strong language or blatant sexual subject matter, I cannot recommend this book to you.  It is at times quite explicit and mature, so I would only recommend it for adult readers who are not put off by this type of content.

One of the more important aspects of any good serialized story is to provide your characters with a good backstory along with the important character development as they level up.  I felt the author spent a large amount of time setting up the world, the characters, and the situation, but when you finished the book you found yourself still wanting more.  With some book that feeling of wanting more is a good thing by way of cliffhangers, etc.  In this book, it just seemed like the author was setting the listener up to buy the second half of the story containing all the good stuff.  I would have enjoyed the book more if all the development was done alongside important sub-plots or other actions which I felt lacking.  I will say that I found a few unique and interesting unexpected twists such as the reason the game was created and why the main character was selected to participate.  Instead of our character enhancing himself in the game, we often see him devolve into making the wrong choices and having to face the consequences; like with his physical life.  I did enjoy some of the interaction between the main character and a few of the other players, but this was often overshadowed by the more erotic and adult direction the book turns in the second half.  There were some humorus and light-hearted characters; with Bob being one of my favorites.

The book's narration by Peter Berkrot is spot on.  His ability to voice and remember multiple characters and their personalities shone quite well in this book.  The audio quality was excellent and professionally performed.  I cannot recall any audio artifacts that pulled me out of the story while listening.  I have a few other books by this narrator, and all of them are of the highest quality narration.  You can tell when someone knows their material and when someone is simply reading; Mr. Berkrot knowns his material.

In summary, this book seems to ride a fine line with one foot in the LitRPG camp and the other in an erotic romance novel.  If you are not expecting it, I can understand why some people were put off when they encountered it.  The author does include a small disclaimer for the second book of the series, but nothing warning listeners of the more mature content found in this book.  If you are planning on finishing a series to answer a book’s story, and you can get past a few of the more erotic and vulgar aspects, you may want to think about picking up this book.  I just feel there are many other less adult-centric books in the genre that you might want to grab something else instead.

too much BDSM for me

I have actually listened to several of these books.
But I have never managed to get over the creepiness of the MC. Something about him just makes me feel slimy.

harem hero fedora man

if you like the isekai genre with all the harem tropes in and no modesty go for it. steamy scenes were not intimate in the least. narrator did his best with the material at hand.

Has this writer ever met a woman?

The love interests feel like badly-written characters for a dating sim.The main character did very little to earn the attention of all the women. There was no sense the women were competing against each other for the attention of the main character; even in polygamist relationships women will compete for the attention of the partner they share. The fact that the female characters are just f***** dolls for Fantasy fulfillment kept pulling me out of the story.

Great listen. Needs edits

I loved this story, well thought out, interesting concepts, good characters, and development, with the exception of some of the minor "party" characters.

The one thing that really bugged me was the stat listings after every chapter. While it probably looked good in the book, maybe with a picture like a baseball card, it is annoying to hear the narrator read it.

The only other note I have is that it's very much a series book, doing a lot of setup at the sacrifice of its own story arc. I hope the new one comes out soon, as I feel like I just finished half a book.

It's like a neck beard wearing a Fedora litrpg

I had to pause it several times just to cringe. It's like a porn plot written by a guy who's only contact with a woman was in a mmorpg game, except that "woman" he learned from was really a man pretending to be a woman using all the cliches he could think of. This author's understanding of what goes on in a woman's head is laughable. There's this sex chapter that goes on and on like a trashy novel, but is just so painfully silly.

That being said I think the author knows his audience..haha... it is perfect for the litrpg audience and I enjoyed the books unintentionally humorous plot. The spells were fun. The main character, however, has an easily bruised ego, and is completely driven by manners and getting respect from others, and he demands subservient women, which makes him seem weak overall. He also constantly tips others nearly all the money he has, which seems odd since people who are in the main character's situation learn to be very frugal.

I loved that the hand to hand fighting was more realistic than nearly any other book I've read. It's so strange that other big authors use nonsense fighting, or Kung Fu and never pick up on Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and the other effective MMA. This book had RNC and Arm-Bars! Overall worth the laughs, but be prepared to roll your eyes.

Great!! Could’ve been Epic!!

This book is GREAT!!** The book would’ve been astoundingly awesome had it cut out the romance (err if you want to call it that). There were too many scenes that reminded me of what I heard of grocery store romance novels but the gist and base story is outstanding and thus the reason for my rating.

This writer has talent, I just think he needs to stay focused on the main story more

Last 3 hours

Ok book until I realized it wasn't going anywhere in the last 3-4 hours when it went from being a gamer fantasy to .... a virgins rendition of their fantasy sex life.
The last 4 hours had nothing to do with anything other than sexual relationships .... I guess if you are into that then great. Story line pretty much dropped off a cliff at that point
